September 30 Day/Rule Focus Pix & Discussion

No question, everyone has their favorites and reasons for having them. I endeavored to collect a limited cross-section of available hardware. I like to use them all,

If I am to adopt the 30DC theory that Technique Trumps Tools, I must be willing to invest the time and effort to learn how to produce a top level shaves for myself using stuff that is more challenging to me. Otherwise, I view myself to be hypocritical.

I am a shave libertarian, folks should use what they want. My opinions on gear and difficulty levels are exactly that, my opinions. I hope folks are not offended.

 

The combination of a fresh Feather Pro and a heavy, fairly aggressive razor has me really exerting almost 'negative pressure' with some shorter strokes. Not too unlike a MonoBilt, an Injectomatic or a Floating Head, truth be told. I feel it is not 'harsher' than those vintages, to be honest. The weight dictates a light touch and the fresh AC blade dictates not scraping. I know 'riding the cap' has been a discussion point on here lately, but I think that spending a few seconds getting the angle engaged without scraping is important.

Jason, I think you just specified the requirements for a good shave with an AC safety razor, regardless of maker. The weight of the razor and 'negative pressure' are key for me. My Vector, General and Hawk all shave pretty much the same with a Feather Super loaded with the exception of the Vector being a bit more maneuverable.

Healthy debate is good. I added my thoughts as an outside opinion to the chicken or egg discussion (---skilled DE shavers adapt quicker to open blade razors and vice versa---). No offense detected on my end. The same discussion could be applied to many of life's skills. Being a skilled baseball player does not inherently make one more adaptable to golf. There are many paths for a person to take for reaching a certain level of skill and the desired results from applying them.

 

i do get that Andrew.kind of like if you can't drive a standard transmission, an automatic will work for you..but once you can work a stick you can drive anything.the whole canned goo/cart concept is about cutting corners..sorry bro..i like old school better....learn the tool..

would like to add ..there are exceptions,like a blue tip won't work for a guy with heavy thick whiskers and a fatboy on 9 will torture a guy with bum fluff ..there are levels in which to start out at depending on certain criteria..

Midnight Stag is a trip down memory lane. My grandpa stored his lawn tractor in his tack shed and the combination of gasoline and leather puts me right back in that shed.

Having said that, I don't want to smell like my grandfather's shed very often. Maybe if it smelled a little more like horse I'd feel differently.

 

sit in a british saloon car from the 60s and it will smell similar..a Jag for example..horse hair seats,leather and petrol leaks..

Sticking with the 7 day challenge over the last coupe of days. The shaves have been fantastic. I find the experience much like adapting to riding a motorcycle with a slipper clutch downshifting. After decades of learning how to match revs on the downshifts, it was spooky to just slam the throttle closed and downshift without worries. In the end, the slipper clutch did as good a job as I did and allowed me to worry about something else. In much the same way, the OneBlade Genesis consistently delivers excellent shaves once I embraced the tech and ignored any prior training on pressure. Just some random thoughts.
