I put a Gem 1912 head on the TAH this morning and gave it a whirl.

I always felt that the 1912 Gem handles were always on the short and thin side, so I wondered if the TAH would sufficiently address the issue for me. Using my adapter thread, the Gem head was easily mounted on the handle. I would guess that the TAH is easily twice the weight of the Gem handle. I like the additional weight as it brings the setup into a weight range that seems to help with the overall shave. I set the length of the handle so that the base fit into the palm of my hand, and I didn’t feel like I was just holding it by my fingertips.

This handle is superb and definitely enhances the shave. No more compensating for the shortcomings of a handle!

Thanks to Tom, I’ll be starting a pass around of the TAH as everyone should get to experience this baby! Just reply back and say that you’re in!

Jim that set looks nice, very impressed. Is the telescoping mating stiff enough to prevent twisting or sliding as your take strokes with the razor?

Ron, there’s enough resistance in the telescopic mechanism that the handle will not turn during a normal shave. The tolerances are fairly tight and there was no movement for me. Would it stay tight over repeated use? I guess it will eventually wear to a point for it to be a concern. Being brand spanking new, it’s great right now.

Yup, I’m in. A good reason to get reacquainted with some of my fine SE razors. :happy088:

Karl, you’re in! Great decision! I’ll make sure to include a threaded adapter or two with the handle so anyone with a Gem style SE can give it a go.

Here’s the TAH pass around list. I’ll update as we go.

    1) @Jim99 - has it
    2) @Karl G - waiting

Curious. Is it a metal on metal friction fit? I'm pretty sure I read all the comments but missed weather there is a tightening nut.

Another great shave this morning with the TAH! This time I used a DE89 head. I love the weight of this handle. I tried changing the length of it mid shave and had no issues. The grip I get on this handle is awesome, with no concerns around it falling out of my hands.

It’s a friction fit, with a screw thread. I have not had any issues with movement during the shaves. The tolerances are tight on this handle. I’ll post a picture of the thread mechanism later.

Interesting. So you screw the inner shaft in and out to adjust the length? I was thinking if wear of the friction fit became an issue. A small grove with an easily replaceable O-ring on the bottom of the inner shaft may be a good salutation.

I had thought of that too. Also to help keep water out of the insides.

would a quick thread help keep tolerances and extend durability over fine threads?

I have an assortment of O rings. I’ll see if I have one that fits.

Btw, here is the screw mechanism in the handle. I do not have an O ring that will fit it at the moment. It would have to be a fairly thin O ring to work. Either way, the tolerances are tight, so no issues any time soon.

Cutting a groove on the inner shaft for the placement of an O ring would do the job.

a routine clean and a dab of vaseline on the treads should keep it in order..
