and on this note, Brad Stine made a comment on one of his albums that mirror that quote:

"There are two groups of people apparently you're allowed to make fun of: Christians, and Southerners"

His whole bit on that is spot on - see a Southerner or Christian in a movie or TV show - automatically they're the butt of all jokes, or the dumb guy.
You can't put anyone else in that spot, because then it would just be offensive....hey, whatever happened to that catch-phrase "tolerance", non-Southerners and non-Christians?

    fan-freakin'-tastic!
I have not seen it til today, now I want one

yeah, that sounds like my catch-all day of February 30th...it's subtlety is that most months have a 30th day, so a person may acknowledge it as a serious statement because it doesn't go above 31.
Only a few people have caught me right away when I've said it, and all but one of them only caught it because I used it on them before.
The other being Micah, who knows me too well....:o

okay, first read the article, take in the information, determine whether or not you'd actually eat the stuff, and then, make SURE to read the comments below, they're hilarious!

EDIT/UPDATE: after reading that article, then go read this site that the above linked to....it's even more hilariouser!!!

Actually, that's startlingly close to an accurate image, I'm afraid.

I am a follower of Christ, albeit a weak one, sometimes. I enjoy shock comedy a little more than I should, and I like South Park. As far as their characterization of Jesus, I find that they are usually far more cruel to those around Jesus than they are to Jesus, himself, and I have learned to disregard their ill-advised jokes just as I do most of the potty humor they lace into their otherwise witty satire. It's a joke. Jesus had a sense of humor. He all but called Peter a blockhead, and we know that God himself laughed at Noah. At least they don't just single Jesus out, and they pick on the other "dieties" too. I think the main reason Christians are such an easy target is that we don't threaten those who disagree with us. The God we emulate is kind and forgiving. His is a system based on Love. If you look at some of the other religions, Buddhism, for example, they tend to be based on harmony and peace--also excellent goals to aspire to. The main thing about most religions is that they focus on the personal aspects of salvation--making sure I'm in the right. Islam (or more specifically, the very vocal, radical fringes of Islam) focus on ensuring that everyone who is not in a "right" state should die. It's a shame that the world cowers to this atitude and we let it lessen the quality of our lives.

I posted it, but something screwy is going on with the comments over at Gizmodo, for some reason it shows up sometimes, but not others. I can't figure out what the deal is. At any rate, the guy awarded me my 1000 internets.

Which in turn reminds me of this:

    Nice.

Okay, now enough on politics and religion. Let's get back on topic:

I have a different take on the article- this reminds me of my children and of the youth I work with. Both crave boundaries and rules and yet fight them tooth and nail at the same time.

This article is a really fancy way of saying, "I need boundaries. We need boundaries. But I don't want boundaries." It's funny how he consistently sees things in a strictly materialistic/ negative light. Fact is, there's a portion of Islam right now that won't compromise and won't back down. Mainstream U.S. no longer understands what that's all about. And it fascinates, sickens, and scares us all at the same time. Since I'm a very out of place traditionalist Catholic (who's Episcopalian clergy at the moment) I get it. I don't agree with the terrorists, but I get the can't/ won't compromise, can't/ won't back down attitude.

    yep.

I don't watch South Park, but I respect their consistency. They butcher all the sacred cows. Not one is left standing. They won't back down from a fight, either.

He left out: "Conservatives and Catholics." Name me one mainstream movie in the past ten years that showed a traditionalist Catholic priest in a positive light. Contrast that against the number of films that capitalize on the various scandals of the RCC and promote heresy.

    Exactly!

All valid and accurate points. There were some studies done on school children, I can't remember when I read about it, but a school took their play area and put up fences, and the kids would roam about all over the place, right up next to the fence. Then they took the fence down, and the kids stayed closer to the center of the yard.
I don't remember all the details of the study, it may have been done in reverse, I can't remember.
But the point is boundaries. We need boundaries, even when we don't like them and try to push them, we, as humans, want boundaries.

I agree with you, I admire them for their sticking to their boundaries, if conservatives/Christians/followers of the God of the Bible lived our lives with the conviction of our faith (like we used to) like Muslims do, things would be much different.

However, the difference, as Micah pointed out, is the way the we lie our convictions - non-violently - versus the "you must accept our way or die" mentality.

And, as I mentioned earlier, I see that day coming - sooner and sooner as more cases like the South Park and 2012 one come up.
All the signs are clear as glass to me, just a matter of time.

meanwhile, had a great shave last night, took down the 4 days growth with a Big Fellow loaded with Bolzano blade, then finished with Krona and Feather. Some Masters bay rum...oh yeah, I smelt goooooood :D

I have to agree with this. For some strange reason, I find their dedication to be admirable, even if I don't always agree with their message.

And on a completely unrelated note, I can never hear or read the phrase "I have a cunning plan" without thinking of this guy:

[sermon] Christianity is not non-violent. That's a lie born of the 60s. It is: violent to others- look at the violence between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland, as well as the fighting that occurred at the Reformation and continues up to the present. Also see the abortion clinic bombings and that abortion doctor murder.

And it's violent to Self: see aceticism and traditional Catholicism for examples. Read the Rule of St. Benedict and the Ladder of Divine Ascent for further examples. Also, look to Christ's own example, in that He followed the Father's will even unto a very violent death. This is the example I look to, and it's the exact opposite of what the world expects. [/sermon]

My point is that Christianity is not a safe, easy religion that falls over when pushed. It is a Way, Life, and Truth that men and women live and die for. "Greater love hath no man..." Modern theology born of the 60s has intentionally obscured this, and modern philosophy has weakened our ability to stand up for what we believe.

You are right about a coming confrontation- between cultures and religions.

what? I have no idea of what you're talking about but it doesn't sound good.

sol92258 I have no earthly idea

Never said it was easy, and I think we're on the same page even though I don't always communicate my words very well.
The abortion clinic bombings were done "in the name of God", or "for God", but had nothing to do with God at all, or His direction. In fact, such things are against His nature, or His calling to His followers today at least.
OT had different intentions for some of the things He called His people to do.
Such examples do not reflect God, but rather people with poor judgement. (Yes, the same argument has been made for the radical extremists of Islam, but doesn't hold water as far as I can tell).
My point is, God doesn't force accepting Him upon you, He offers Himself to us, we make the decision whether to accept or not.
The religion in question here offers their beliefs, and if you accept you're good. If you don't, their teachings are to kill you. That's oversimplifying it a smidge, but it's the truth.
The teachings of Christ do not do that. You choose your eternity.
And yes, following Christ may very well lead you to death. For many of us, it may very well be a direct result of the topic of which we're discussing.
My pastor has shared a phrase with us; "Meekness isn't weakness".
I think we're discussing different ends of the spectrum here. The follower of Christ isn't a pushover, but violence/vengeance/hate are not of the Lord, but is exactly what is offered by the group in question.
Any action of such from a Christian today is not a result of following Christ, but ourselves. That's the power of it - one religion encourages you to act out in human nature; the other encourages you to "die to self" and natural reactions, and depend on God for the supernatural power to do so.

    exactly

First, a note on recent discussions... lively debate is good and all, and it's wonderful that everyone has an opinion and is willing to back it up with sound argument and defense. I feel a personal need to call a stop to the religious discussion. I've seen this sort of thing devolve into senseless attacks and uncivilized behavior in the past, and I don't wish to see our dear HYD thread sullied by such shenanigans. Can we all just agree that terrorism and cowtowing to terrorism are equally egregious acts and that senseless homicide and violence are deplorable? Now, let's move on, and return to less "touchy" topics; Some examples to get you started:

    Oreo Cakesters:Are they for dunking?
Who was the better Darren, Dick York or Dick Sargeant?
Yankees vs. Red Sox, which is the better team?
    Aggies vs. Longhorns, who's better?
    Abortion, right or not?

You know, what, on second thought, forget my suggestions for other topics. Let's just find something else to talk about, okay?

You know, someone posts a picture then everyone loads it up in theGimp (legally free alternative to Photoshop) and wails on it. For an example, check out worth1000.

And finally, I think I found a gizmodo alternative that's actually a little more suited to my tastes in electronics--the cheap chinese knock-off!

I was just working on that same/similar post, but my connection dropped...maybe God wanted us to keep discussing?

Or maybe God was telling me this Trillion connection stinks :happy102

Yeah, being as it's only been three of us so far, with pretty much the same worldview, it's been pretty non-confrontational - too bad Dr. Mike ain't perusing as much anymore :D

    So, on to other pastures...
