the adapters should work well enough, it's only providing power, it's not like there's any data traveling across that could get corrupted or anything

if you want new, do a lot of shopping around. you can generally get a very good Asus desktop system for less than a decent Dell or HP, mainly because they're lesser known to the mass, but well known by techs. My new laptop is an Asus, and it's fantastic.

If you're okay with buying used, try CDIcomputers.com. They refurbish computers, some are barely used, but they come with 3-5 year warranties, just like a new one, and you can save lotsa dolla's

are you primarily looking for a desktop or laptop?

True, but I wondered about the power quality if the SATA drives were more sensitive to clean power without the spikes that noisy molex can deliver. I suppose with modern PS those aren't really an issue any way. I haven't hooked up a molex to a probe in a long time (15 years?)

good point, but I will note that several new computer we got at work that use SATA drives, came from the factory with the adapters in place.

so you'll need to get a monitor, but you can save enough with the refurbished machines at CDI to get a nice LCD monitor.
I'm not seeing many *good* machines under $500 with monitor (there are some out there, but the old adage "you get what you pay for" is in effect)

don't forget to check out frys.com, they usually have some great prices as well.

all the office supply stores, electronic stores, and Wal-Mart and Target will start having back to school specials (as Nick previously mentioned) that are usually pretty decent deals

egads.... I just went through all my bins of extra/unused cables and what not... I have 3 SATA cables but only 1 SATA/Molex power cable. What gives? I am starting to regret the decision to buy bare drives.

Whoa...just tried the TSD Dark layout for the site. Rather ominous and Halloweeny isn't it? Too much for me.
