Honestly? (I know, I know, this is my answer for everything, but hear me out) Before I spent one red cent, I'd consider booting up Puppy Linux or some other really lite OS on the laptop you have. If all you want is internet and occasional office app stuff, one of the beefier pups might be a good fit. It has the added benefit that you needn't really worry about viruses or anything. Not to mention the speed boost. Just my .02.

I just finished watching Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, for the first time. I don't get why this movie has gotten such criticism and vitriol over the years. I went into it expecting an homage to adventure movies of the 30's and 40's with a touch of modern special effects. It totally lived up to my expectations. To those who would say that the acting was wooden, I would say, "have you ever watched any old movies?" To those who would say that the story was lacking, "have you ever watched any old movies?" I found the tone to be true to some of the classics. I could really see Katherine Hepburn and Lawrence Olivier in the lead roles. This movie looked exactly like what I would expect a late 30's movie to look like if directors of that day had access to modern film-making tech. A pox on popular opinion, I loved the movie.

Was it a great movie, no. Was it an enjoyable movie, yes. As I recall, wasn't this based on either the fell of a comic book or one of the old cliffhanger reels? Having done that, it has done that well.

I thought about mentioning Linux...Ubuntu would probably run really well on it, as well, with a bit more community support - heck, if you try Linux Mint, there's a very large discussion on it 'across the street'.
My reservation was not knowing how adventurous Mike was feeling at the moment :D

I was also thinking Peppermint, but you would have to be comfortable installing open office and other software. But I wasn't getting the vibe that Mike was wanting to go that route.

FWIW: I concur with the ASUS suggestion. My wife likes her ASUS netbook and I just ordered an ASUS motherboard for my upgrade project.

yeah, that was my feeling as well. However, it is a very viable option if he wanted to get the new computer, then experiment with the old one....just sayin....

And ASUS...it's the only motherboard I've ever used for custom builds. They're video cards are good, too. And optical drives...of course, those are kinda hard to mess up.

They're netbooks were some of the first out, and remained the top dawg for a long time.

And my ASUS laptop kicks major booty. While in Best Buy, the one I chose (G60) royally outperformed the Dell, HP, and Toshiba's with similar (and even a bit higher) specs.

I really, really, really, really, really, really wanted (yes, really) the G73, but it was just too much, and since I'm not a high-performance gamer, didn't really need that much system....but I really, really, really wanted it.

    (yes, really)

sky captain is one of the few movies I own on dvd - not sure how I ended up with it though. It was good, but not worth the total running time in my opinion

My beef of the day/month/year: A couple months ago I upgraded my cell phone and got the HTC Hero. It's a Google phone running Android. Really liked it. Great functionality. Solid OS. Plenty of extras and so on. But the Hero is last years phone...the upgraded version is the recently released Evo. I was actually going to hold on and wait for the Evo's release but decided I didn't want to deal w/ all the "new phone" bugs that invariably occur. So I went w/ the Hero and saved a few bucks in the process.

Anyway the Evo gets released with the updated OS (2.1 I think). Well Sprint and HTC decide to make 2.1 available to Hero users as well. I was perfectly happy w/ the Hero OS (version 1.56) but my picture mail stopped working suddenly, and I was told by tech support I had to upgrade to get it working again. Now the phone is all sluggish and slow. Programs take forever to load. Screen freezes are common. Crashes can occur. Making a speed dial phone call takes about 20 to 30 seconds now waiting on the damn phone to catch up. Online forums are full of people bitching about this, but do Sprint and HTC care? Hell no, they want everyone upgrading to the Evo. I'm sure the Hero processor was never meant to nor can it handle the new OS. And the best part: you can't roll back to the earlier version. This is so totally bogus, and I am royally pissed.

    ARGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!.........

Alright. You may resume your frivolity.
