SOTD THURSDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 10, 2020

The sun is coming up as I write this on what looks to be a bright, cold, sunny day in the Philadelphia suburbs. This morning I selected a Gillette gold plated British Rocket for the dome and a straight razor I haven’t used in a while, the Genco 35, for my mug shave. My regular shave prep consists of a cold water rinse followed by a good scrub with Argan Oil. Everything went swimmingly well along with some rudimentary schooling. The three pass (WTG, ATG, XTG) mug shave went well until I decided that I could buff a small section of my right cheek without lubricant. I knew better, and my hubris against the shave gods resulted in the first cut I’ve had in quite some time. It was quickly addressed with styptic gel. Perfecting open edge shaving, at least for me, has been through aversive conditioning. Note to self, do not cowboy about! Always use lather for every shave stroke. The dome shave, on the other hand, went quite well. The Rocket, while not a favorite dome shaver, always does the job when equipped with a Feather blade. Two ATG passes put the baby to bed leaving me refreshed, chastened, yet still velveteen smooth. The score, Shave Gods 1, Jeff 0!

RAZOR: Genco 35 5/8 (Mug), British Gillette Rocket (Dome)
    BLADE: Feather DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Alpha Shaving T-400 Tribute with 26mm Two Band Badger
    SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Pre de Provence Bergamot & Thyme AS Balm.

You definitely can't go wrong with those two razors. The Genco, imho, is one of the best NY razors produced. The Gillette is absolutely stunning.

Thanks, Joe! I was talking to Glen Mercurio the other day about two razors he just finished restoring for me, and he is a Genco fan! He also likes Thistle brand because of the incredible steel. I’ve got one in the mail to him. Picked up another in incredible condition. Because the brand isn’t all that well known, they were both incredibly cheap. They apparently can hold a 30k edge like few other razors. I’m awaiting the arrival of the one in great condition. :)

Happy Thursday everyone. I am up and moving this morning so that is a positive. Back with the Pils today but I went with the ATG LE Shavemac brush. I absolutely love this flat top brush. I really enjoy the La Toja scent when face lathering. It is light but has a mineral/herbal note that is very pleasing. Three passes and touch ups ended in a near BBS. I was not up to chasing the baby. I hope everyone has a great Thursday.

A little hokey haiku for your morning! ;)

Today is Wilson's 6th birthday. He woke up way too early and was very excited. Six years ago he was born as a micro-preemie at just 26 weeks. Alice developed sudden high blood pressure and he had to be delivered early to basically save both of them. He spent 123 days at two hospitals before being discharged. There were some really dark days in there where we didn't think he would live. Not to get all sappy on you all, but he is a little miracle. He also drives us nuts from time to time! He's moved beyond his initial medical difficulties and is now a healthy and happy child. The Lord works in mysterious ways.

    Enjoy your day!

This is about as decadent as Danny get.

The Parker CHST (chrome handle silver tip) brush was a pleasure to use this morning and created some beautiful lather. The Above the Tie Atlas handle with the R2 plate and an Astra was just awesome this morning. This combo is the sports car in my den. Three passes and I would call this one BBS. Finished it off with some American Tobacco by Andy Hilfiger.

Jim @jluc notice the reflection on the underside of the baseplate. :D

Hope everyone has a great day!
