Old arcade and pinball games are something i've been into for a little bit now. I've got a decent amount of experience with the early Bally/Stern solid state machines. I'm currently restoring a silverball mania I picked up a couple weekends ago.

What kind of machine is it? All the things that "kick" the ball are operated by solenoids. Usually, one solenoid operates each item. Since you're mentioning a problem with bumpers and flippers, I think i'd suspect a power problem in the rectifier, are possibly there could even be an issue with the solenoid driver. Have you had to do any work to either?

If you don't know already, don't use any lubricant on the machine.

This place is awesome. This is what I was talking about when I said I am always surprised by what people around here know. Seems like there is always someone with similar interests. :)
It is a 1986 Bally "Strange Science." Pretty fun game. We had lots of hours in on it when I was a kid. I have it working acceptably now, all of the pop bumpers and flippers do work, but they seem a bit slow to me. The main flippers used to shoot the ball up around the ramp at the top regularly, and they very rarely do now. I read some posts where people recommended different types of flipper kits for this machine, but I basically want it to be like the original as far as performance. I have seen flipper rebuild kits, but I don't know how to identify which ones to use with the current solenoids, or if it is even something I should attempt to tackle on my own.
The pop bumpers just don't seem sensitive enough, but maybe I am just being picky. When a ball rolls into one I expect it to fire, but it seems like it has to hit it with some speed. I was hoping there was something I could do to liven them up, or make them more sensitive without having to worry about re-balancing them or anything overly complicated.
I haven't done anything to the solenoids yet, so far I have cleaned and waxed the play field, replaced all of the rubber, and burnt out bulbs, adjusted sensors on the kickers because they were double firing, replaced the main ramp, and repaired the antigravity ramp with some stainless. That plastic has really gotten brittle. There is also a kicker hole. The sensor in that was worn down and wasn't sensing the ball, so if the ball fell in you had to remove the glass to get it out. I ended up gluing a piece of plastic on top of the sensor to bring it back up, and that is working well again.
This machine also has a neon tube topper that isn't working, but I am pretty sure that is a machine specific problem. I will have to do some research on that too, but it isn't as important to me as game play.

Your machine is the 6803 series, which I don't know as much about as the early SS games. Here's a couple links you might have use for:

General info and pics of your machine
    Good place for parts
    Good place for parts
    Bally service manual
Comprehensive repair manual for plain folks (really good read)

I'm lookin through a few places trying to find a rebuild kit, but I don't think i've found the right one yet. Gimme a bit and i'll see if I can find something. That last link has some info on the flipper solenoid themselves that might lead you in the right direction. Your flippers look a bit different from mine.... If you decide it's something you don't want to do yourself, I know a great guy for that kind of work, just let me know.

An unrelated thing to check out is the battery. Bally soldered a NiCad battery to the mpu to hold scores. I can't count how many machines have went down because that battery was never replaced, and it leaked acid all over the board ruining it. That last link has some pics to id it if you need it.

Ok, so in an attempt to find some Christmas music I can tolerate I thought I'd listen to TSO's Carol of the Bells, which, admittedly is an awesome version of the song, don't get me wrong. However, the internet has tainted me to the point where whenever I hear the song, all I hear is "Ding! Fries are done. Ding Fries are done. Would you like an apple pie with thaaaat--Would you like an apple pie with thaaaaaat!"

wait a minute... how old are you, Rodd? I'm not looking for your specific age but for the general ballpark. 30s? 20s?

    +10000.

Ironically, listening to "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)" (the name of the TSO song) is what I use to get the "Ding! Fries are done" tune out of my head
