The only way of removing a knot safely that I know of is steaming it. I would look on eBay, you can find some affordable brush knots on there. They appear to be good quality.

Thank you Charlie! Bought the rack from that auction site, ~$30 total delivered. It's just a new version of what Gary showed. I changed the center pole to one from an inexpensive brush/razor stand from Amazon (which was maybe another $15), once I found that the bolts/screws had matching diameter and thread pitch. This allows me to hang any of my brushes.

Edit...yeah, I added the heat shrink wire coatings in the various colors to keep from scratching brush handles.

 

That is a super nice setup and shave, Myles. A Red Tip would just laugh at a week's beard growth.

Are you planning to take any of your shaving gear with you when your enlistment starts? I'm guessing you'll be limited on time and in what you'll be able to use.

i have set knots in a couple of brushes including my Mr.EE .brush.i have used plastic handled omega brushes as donors..super easy to break apart and the knots weren't glued in.10098 and 10048 were the ones i used..26mm hole,knots were 27.4 ish mm

 

Nice stands Gents ! I used to have a 2 story cast iron one I got rid of. Especially like Blair's covering the metal for protection. What did you use ?

 

Well at basic training I will have to reside on an issued disposable cartridge razor and a can of issued goop. Once I'm out in the fleet and stationed on base I can use whatever I want. Thankfully my shave den collection is not huge, so I should have plenty of room to bring everything with me (shaving wise) once I am moved into my room. Assuming I will be sharing a bathroom with someone I could always store my items in a drawer.

 

I should have done some images of my experience with an Omega 10098. It really is simple, and it's an awesome knot. Only requires eye glasses, a hammer, a flat section of concrete in the garage, diagonal cutters, and the brush. 2-3 whacks and you'll have a knot that's glued into a plastic bowl insert (which is fitted/glued into the original plastic handle). Cut the plastic bowl off the glue bump, trim a little....you have a knot ready. ~15 minutes if you're really taking your time. Or...if you have a vise in the garage, even better.

 

What Gary said about the plastic handled Omega brushes, pretty easy. Steaming the knot out is if you're trying to save the handle as it will likely ruin the knot.

i have black shrink wrap for auto wiring but haven't gotten round to it..haven't seen any scratches so far due to the rounded arms..

 

very cool.channel lock pliers and a thin jewelers saw worked for me.blue tape the knot base.popped off the metal ring with a small screwdriver,the lower handle pops off.thin diagonal cut from top to bottom,peels off like a pilsbury croissant tube...took me longer to type this out..

 

there are ones with curved fingers/arms like mine ..antique store purchase,$20 ..either work nicely..

Great kit, Gary! I agree with your assessment of Gillette Pure shave cream, but you have to admit, compared to their other offerings, it’s pretty dang good!

Still working to finish off a sample of Simpson shave cream.....1-2 uses left after completely overloading the TGN silver tip in @jtspartan's BRM handle. Uber lather created today with too much cream in the knot, wonderful face feel of peaky lather slinging fun. This shave hatchet from J3Customs started the morning with ~30 laps on CrOx coated linen, followed by linen untreated, and finally leather stropping. 3 full passes of smooth shaving, WTG, XTG in to out, XTG out to in (toe down for the neck). No shenanigans, fun shave. Palm squirt of PAA's Star Jelly smeared all over the face, followed by a healthy dousing of paco rabanne's pour homme, a very nice smooth EdT for Fougère Friday.
