Kung-Fu shoes look great. Never thought about them, but I think I could wear a good pair rather often.

Well, actually, these were the first ones to catch my eye... I wasn't sure about the size though---they only have them in 9 1/2. My shoe size varies depending on the style of shoe... I went to about.com and found instructions for determining my shoesize, and it confirms that they should fit. And they're only $20! I actually kind of like the look of these better, even if they don't have any leather.

    Now--on a more serious note:

Pop called me tonight and told me about the son of a friend of his. The son is a super-bright guy, graduated head of his class, passed the bar exam on the first try, etc. After Christmas he told his mom that he was going out of town--she found out recently that instead he had been holed up in a friend's apartment. His behavior sounded like someone suffering depression--sleeping constantly, not wanting to leave the house, etc. Sometime during that time, he bought a gun. Normally, not that big of a deal since he hunts.

Anyway, he said he had a job interview scheduled in California, and headed out on Feb. 2. He stayed in a hotel in Nevada for 3 days instead of his reserved 1 day. He went to a sporting goods store and bought something, but we don't know what. The last time he used his card was to buy gas at a last-chance-for-gas type gas station. The sherrif's office said that beyond the gas station is 200 square miles of wilderness with no chance of getting a cell signal. That was on Feb. 5. Nobody has heard from him since.

It's possible that he has gone on a self-discovery trip or something and slipped off-grid, but really, listening to Pop describe some of the personal things going on his life, it doesn't sound too promising. I don't know the guy, and I barely know his mom, but my heart goes out to the family. I think they're pretty good people, and I hate for my suspicions to be confirmed. Please keep them in your prayers.

    A) Kung Fu shoes are quite comfy, though I could not wear them all day

    B) apparently my page hadn't updated at the time of Micah's serious post, I hate that my frivolous post followed immediately after.
Heartfelt prayers for the family, and for the young man....I fully understand his feelings, if suspicions are accurate

If I didn't know better, I'd say snow in 3 days.

    How'd Christie's appointment go?

    Back to shoes:
Upon checking the credentials of the only site that carries those $20 shoes, I'm seeing some pretty bad reviews... makes me leery of sending money.

Found these for about $35, but I don't like the look of them nearly as much... they look much cheaper to me. I think it's the vinyl.

What do you guys think about these for a barbary pirate?

For reference, here's a barbary pirate:

I know the slippers aren't just like the ones in the picture, but I figure a pirate sailing from the middle-east and the orient might have a little lee-way in what kind of footwear they would choose.

okay, here's the real question...why are so many folks logged in to TSD (and Facebook) here on Valentine's night? :happy102

Prays for the missing young man - absolutely.

Red and gold "pirate" shoes - not so much.

Well, you have to consider that Barbary Pirates spent a great deal of time in and around Arabia. It's not entirely unlikely that a Corsair might have absconded with a pair of more decorative shoes.

I didn't say they wouldn't be reasonably authentic - I just find them ugly.

    I see what you're saying.

They are pretty ugly. But it's a glorious kind of ugly that somehow lets you know that no matter how bad things might get out there on the high seas, all you have to do is look down at these shoes and know that the galleon on the horizon is ripe for the picking and you'll be able to unload what's useful and still make it back in time catch the dance of seven veils.

Then again, I guess I could just make some new boot toppers.

The problem with the toppers I have is that they just don't work great. I designed them myself, and I think they need some serious refining. The idea presented in that link makes a lot of sense, in retrospect. I might just end up doing something like that--then I can wear my comfortable, broken-in boots.

The other option is to make some fake buckles for an old pair of dress shoes... throw on a pair of long wool socks and call it a day.

    I just don't know.

I just wonder what colour they are underneath. If it's something dark or even brown, the chipping might just add to the look...
