Happy Tuesday Everyone. I decided to pull out Mike's Vetiver for this morning's shave. This is a straight up dark vetiver with no green. However, I love the dark damp scent. As expected the Mr EE brush did a wonderful job loading and lathering the Mike's. With all the artisan makers constantly churning out new soap bases it is nice that Mike's just keeps on making one of the best soaps without feeling the need to change. Back with the OREN, aka potato peeler, today. With its floating blade design the razor reminds me of an artist club version of the OneBlade. Three passes and touch ups caught the baby with ease. A splash of Fine Fresh Vetiver and I think I am ready for the day. I hope everyone has a great Tuesday.

SOTD TUESDAY MORNING, Day 3 of Gillette Focus, JANUARY 12, 2021

I must admit that I’m enjoying this Gillette safety razor focus here at TSD, and so is my dome! The Gillette selected for today’s shave is my Gillette Big Fellow which dates from the second year of production (1920). The shave on this gassed up Old Type influenced design was, as a British member of the crew is wont to say, “divine”. Particularly when fitted with a Kai blade. Lots of blade feel which I’ve come to enjoy since becoming a regular straight shaver. The combination of size, weight, and heft-in-hand worked perfectly to deliver the kind of two pass velveteen dome smoothness I’ve come to crave in my noggin shaves.

Manhattan Cutlery was a John Newton & Co. brand, circa 1861-1916, manufactured in Sheffield England. This particular straight razor blade was sold in America through the New York cutlery importer H. Boker and fitted with horn scales upon arrival based on a blade matching image." (From the H. Böker & Co. history: "1868) and is easily one of my favorite straight razors. It just feels right in hand, continues to hold a buttery smooth edge. And this morning delivered a luxurious three pass delight. As an older man I’ve really come to look forward to my morning shaves; they truly set the tone for the rest of the day. And today I feel velveteen smooth, clean and refreshed!

RAZOR: Manhattan Cutlery Sheffield 13/16 (Mug), Gillette Big Fellow (Dome)
    BLADE: Kai DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
    BRUSH: Rooney Ebony Pure Badger
    SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Aqua Velva (Spanish Version).

Very happy with my shave today. 0:20 to load the Crown King brush with the Stoylin Sheep soap. 20 seemed to be all I needed. Course I could have gone longer, and maybe I will tomorrow, but I was good with the 20. It was another one of those "You're gonna need that second pass" shaves, but even in the first pass I covered a lot of ground, sometimes going twice over. I see people do it that way in videos, anyway. This is a great soap(all Stoylins are, but there's something special about those unscented ones-well this is my first Stoylin unscented, but I'm talkinabout MWF in this regard, too). What a soft, clean, fresh feeling with the soap alone-now the aftershave:. The Bill Neumann Heartwood. My first comment is about the pour-spout. I think the crowd at Neumann read a lot of the complaints of it being too large(kinda like Aqua Velva), so they fixed it accordingly. It's just right. Hard to describe, as there are many "goodies" in the ingredients. Pipe Tobacco, Blue Spruce, Guiac Wood, to name a few. They do a great job blending them all together, resulting in that "old-fashioned" manliness feeling. There's good "skin food" here.. Remember Old Spice' famous gig-"If your grandfather hadn't worn this, you wouldn't be here"? For Bill Neumann, same thing except you'd have to replace "grandfather" with "great-grandfather". My grandfathers were born in 1895 and 1903 and it was around that time that William Neumann began his work. I was being silly calling it Bill Neumann, but there really IS a Bill Neumann-William's grandson, who did the descriptions and wrote the fascinating story on the website and, in smaller print, on the products themselves. Expensive as these products are, I may well repurchase(course I also have the 1907 I got along with the Heartwood). All of this made today's shave Outta This World Excellent.

Nice shave Jeff. Base plate looks more like a new thickness with a thinner top cap. A lot of MWF love on TSD lately........

Dave, I basically locked the top plate and bottom plate together with a nut. I then shaped the profile on a bench grinder keeping a cup of water to dip it in and keep it cool. Final clean up was with a file laying on a table and moving the head across the file. Finished up the same way with Emory cloth.

Evan @MrEE offered to plate the head and while it was at his place he fabricated the beautiful storage box for it.

Thread link is below that will show some more pictures. I also cut an Old Type head down as well. Take care.
