I acquired a 1920s Gillette Tuck Away off of the bay pretty recently, some members here on tsd have seen it posted in some other threads. I figured I would create this as a sub thread specifically for other people to post pictures of their tuck away. by the way Gillette Bostonian razor's (specifically the 1920s models, as they are similar to the Tuck Away but larger) are welcome
In this pic, I have five razors with the New Improved head. Back row: New Standard Gold, Bostonian Silver (Canada), Bostonian Gold. Front Row: Tuckaway Gold, Milady Decollettee Gold Coral Set. And even though it doesn't have a New Improved head, I included a Tuckaway New SC with short common bar handle..................
WOW those are some beauties! yea the gold Bostonian is up for my next razor on my list at some point.
i do prefer the new deluxe version as it is made for the later blades..hence my passing the tuckaway along..
Regardless of the set or whether they were 2 or 3 piece razors the new improved came in 2 specific razor head types. The ones from 1921 - 1928 used the 106 designation by Gillette. The ones from 1928 - 1929 used 126. The difference visually between the 2 is how much the cap overhangs the base plate. The width of the flat part of the base plate is what is different. I don't know if it makes a difference in how each shave. 1921 - 1928 106 style razor head 1928 - 1929 126 razor style head
Hmm never seen the 1928-1929 model on ebay before and actually never heard of that model before until now, cool info!
Some also came with serial numbers and lieu of that you can use this feature to put a date range on a new improved.
Seller's don't know or make that distinction since it doesn't affect the price. You have to look carefully at the seller's pictures or ask them directly for pics when looking for fine details like this.
i heard it was an upgrade to rectify a blade cracking issue.. https://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/henry-jacques-gaisman-mastermind.62586/ some where in here..
