Oh, oh, I see how it is. I finally get on and no one's home! :( What is this? Smell-o-vision?

Okay ending to an incredibly crappy afternoon/early evening.

On my way home from work, had to stop by administration building to check a switch and pick up a hard drive for one of the servers, got a call from my brother in law.
Sister was in a wreck on her way to college after work.

School bus ran a stop sign, crossing the road right in front of her. Hard to stop from 55 MPH, extremely blessed she reacted the way she did, turning as much as she could the direction the bus was going. It spun her car around to where it was facing the other direction than she was originally going.

She's okay, some bumps and bruises, in some pain, but all x-rays and scans showed everything fine.

Totaled the car. Dad went to the car first, his place of work is halfway between hometown and where the wreck was, so he was at the scene before word got to him that she was already at the hospital.

He said he's surprised that she's alive, much less as good of condition as she's in after seeing that. Small Nissan car vs. big school bus though, could've been much, much worse.

Sorry to hear about the wreck, but I'm glad everyone's okay. Sometimes we're more blessed than we realize, huh?

On a lighter note, Gladys is proving to be somewhat of a small sensation over on the R.

Wow... I am glad that she is doing so well and hope she has a speedy recovery.

And if so, are the kids OK?

    ugh....

One kid on the bus, they're fine, a little freaked out, as you can imagine.
Bus driver ticketed for failure to stop at a stop sign, AND.....operating a bus without a CDL!

I know things are tight on the schools, but there's just some things you HAVE to have, can't cut corners. I think I heard it was actually expired, the driver had gotten one before, or something, but that could be inaccurate.

Once everything was calmer last night, thoughts and discussions went over to the lighter side, like:

My brother-in-law's brother: "Didn't you just put brand new tires on that car?"

Brother-in-law: "Yeah, but that's not the worst of it, I just filled it up with gas yesterday!"

The transportation director for the school came by and introduced himself. I know he had to feel like a sheep among wolves walking in there, but no reason to, he's not the one responsible for the driver's decision. There were enough witnesses and evidence to show it was the bus driver's error, so they're going to take responsibility....but we'll see how this goes I guess.

    So I saw this:

And that got me to thinking...

Wouldn't it be more cost-effective and healthy to just use a stencil and some spray-on tan?

Well Today turned from Thursday to Friday. Sent the email that I will be out of the office and will NOT be available by cell phone all weekend. I am spending the weekend in Manhattan and this will be the first weekend in 5 years that I have not been on call.

    Seriously? High schoolers? Seriously?

Stealing mouse balls is so below Jr High anymore, sheesh.

Wish I could determine who the culprits are (besides the teachers sending half the class to the lab unsupervised - that's the biggest problem itself), not only is it destruction of school property and vandalism, it also breaks the agreement they signed at the beginning of the year.
    Guess what? You fail.
At this year, at life, get over it.

We've made public school too soft on you. The real world is gonna chew you up and spit you out. Shame? Humiliation? Regret? All these things we (incorrectly) shelter you from in school because "oh you might get your poor itty bitty insignificant feelings hurt"? Get ready for a really bad day when you get in the real world.

    Good luck.

And have fun with your mouse balls

    ya jackwagon

Haha very true, I remember going into the labs with the old mac computers and the mice wouldn't have a ball. like one out of 3 would be missing. Such a pain to replace and so stupid to take it for a joke. However with optical now you just tape some paper over it.

My wife teaches computer classes. One student was banned from using computers because he was going on non-approved sites. Adult content I was told. Can't block them freedom of speech I guess. Now my wife still has to teach him computer classes but he can't use a computer. Drives her nuts. Sometimes I think it's to bad no child is left behind.

It is. In their mind, it's a harmless prank. No one's hurt, they get to feel some sense of "superiority" or something, and that's that. I would have thought the same thing back then - I personally wouldn't have done it, but would have laughed if someone else did.

However, on the flip side, that makes the machine useless. And mice, while inexpensive, ain't cheap, especially for school's already under budget crunch (or worse). And replacement balls aren't free.

Optical is a whole 'nuther can of worms.
Yes, there's the tape trick. However, they know it's old, so they do other things.
Elmer's glue, nail polish, etc. over/in the sensor really is a pain. If done right, it's really hard to discover.
However, they know that we know they're game, so they've gone a step from simple, impermanent vandalism to permanent destructive vandalism, and using a knife or other sharp implement to scratch or gouge the clear plastic cover over the sensor. Scatters the signal all over the place, useless mouse. That's only happened once that I'm aware of, but who knows.

I believe in second chances, and depending on circumstances, a few more.

However, I also fully believe in not casting pearls before swine (the Scripture reference, not the comic, which I love, too :D).

I don't fully agree with other nation's systems of determining children's futures so young, and putting them on a career path where they're either in a class geared toward a degree field, or getting a basic education and going on to a vocational school, but I do see the merits.
Main thing is it limits their potential, but at the same time if it's a child you know will likely never try anyway, then they're a sandbag to the rest of the class that want to move forward.
It's a delicate balance, but I think we here in the US are waaaaaaaay too far to the "soft" side of the spectrum.

Ooh, can I get in on some of this grumble-action?

Had a projector blow a bulb... I'm talking tiny flecks of mercury coated glass all in the projector! (You'd think they could design them so that won't happen) So anyway, without a replacement bulb in hand, I just pulled an older projector out and went to all the trouble to mount it and get it ready.

Turn the projector on...ENTER PASSWORD!?!?! Yup, the employee that had the projector before had apparently set a password on the projector.

    Two important factors here:

    1. She isn't likely to remember what she set the password to.
    2. It's out of warranty--which means I'll likely have to pay Dell for the backdoor password.
    3. The projector that blew the bulb was one of the ones I spent all summer mounting--which means, I've probably got more of this to come--at $300+ a pop for bulbs.
    4. I can't count.

ugh... Between administrators, legislators, student damage, and irresponsible staff, I have pretty much stopped taking my classes to a lab. Labs have room for 36 computers and originally had 36 computers. However, administrators took 6 computers out of each lab to make more labs. So hurray... we have more labs, but none of them are large enough for my larger classes. So now we have a lab with 30 computers with one being designated teacher use only. Of the 29 remaining computers, about 20% have worthless mice or other student caused problems. There is also typically a computer with a paper taped on it by a teacher that simply says "don't use". Why? What is wrong with it? (often it looks like the monitor was unplugged and the person couldn't figure that out)...

So now, time to get 30-34 kids in a lab... typically 24 computers work. Meh...

Now, the mandatory state testing must be done on a computer hard wired to the network. Yeah, that works well when we have 300 students per grade level and only about 120 computers that the state finds acceptable to take the test.... its going to be fun...
