The bulk of my plans for the day got shifted on me, but I'm okay with that because it means more time at home. Just started watching the original Mission Impossible series on Netflix, I'm absolutely thrilled that there's 7 seasons available. I love that show, 55 minutes of heist-y goodness in every episode.

Also got some positive feedback on my lens blur filter from one of the main filter contributors, so that was pretty cool, too.

Well, I guess technically I did ask for it....

So, in response to my "what else could go wrong this year" exasperated rhetoric earlier.....

Had to work late Friday evening for graduation, just in case of rain making an outdoor graduation inconvenient. I did get a live stream figured out using VLC....well, live technically, there's anywhere from a 5 to 20 second delay, but still, I was rather pleased with myself.
Turns out all that hustling was for nothing, they just managed to squeeze the ceremony in before the downpour came, so, time, technically, wasted.
Should've been my first clue, eh?

Anyway, at one point in the evening I checked the radar on my phone: likelihood of getting the ceremony done outside was 50/50 I thought, but they better hurry, then I locked my screen, put my phone in my pocket.
About 5-10 minutes later, decided to check again, pulled my phone out - no signal.
    Hmmm, that sucks.
Went through the normal procedure - waited, waited some more, rebooted phone, took battery out, etc.
    Still, no signal.
Well, perhaps the heavy weather all around created a problem.
    Unlikely, but perhaps.
Finished the evening, got home, still no signal, went to bed, got up, hey! New texts and missed calls!
    Must have been an outage.

Fast forward to 1:00. Sitting at a nephew's birthday party, I check some stuff on my phone...still working.
My wife and I leave, going out to dinner for our anniversary. Got on the road out of town, see the sky looks kinda dark behind us, grab phone to check weather....no signal.
Well, crap. We're heading to town anyway, we'll swing by the Verizon store.
TL;DR version: Something's borked in the phone, new one should arrive Tuesday.

Full, abridged version: First employee took phone, checked some things (restart, took battery out, checked water sensors, etc), couldn't figure it out.
Next employee took it, went in the back, come back out about 5 minutes later, "Sir, this phone has been rooted and has Gingerbread installed."
As if to say it's no longer covered....
"Uh, no it hasn't. I've been very tempted to do so, but I'm not going to do that until the warranty has expired."
"Sir, this isn't the original system, see the way the screen does, that'sn not original"
"Yes, that's simply an alternate home screen, GoLauncher. See..." and proceed to bring up the stock home screen.
"But that can't be installed unless it's rooted..."
    Uggh, lady please....
"Ma'am, look..." -clickety, clickety...system settings, Android version..."see here, Android version 2.2. Froyo"
    "Hmmm"
"Look, if I had rooted it, I would be able to turn the hotspot on, go ahead, try it..."
She agrees, tries it, it won't work....
    "Okay, I'll keep trying"

    Me, 1. Ignorant employee, 0.

15 minutes later: Still not working, so she decided to reset the whole thing....uggh, all my apps. Yes, they're supposed to reinstall when you log back in, but I would have appreciated an opportunity to backup.
AND take the memory card out before you wiped it.

Me, 1. Jackass employee, 2 (one for reset, bonus points for wiping my card too...)

So, 1.5 hours in the Verizon store, on our way to anniversary date, and I still have a dead phone, new one won't arrive until Tuesday (hopefully), and even then will be Wednesday before I can go back to the store and have it setup.
Lost all the data, pics, etc.
Officially, all my apps, even the paid apps, are supposed to reinstall when I log in, but knowing my luck this year, I'll be surprised.

Actually, I fairly highly expect my apps from Google's appstore to install, but I'm not sure about Amazon or AppBrain.

Guess time...lots, and lots, of time...will tell.

Oh, sure, that's not that big a deal, more an inconvenience that anything?
    Yeup.

But noticing my rear tires on my car are still out of alignment, and the tread is showing on the 2nd brand new pair of tires back there, is.
That's the last time I'm giving them any business, unless they make things right this time. I'm going to go show them what's going on, if they deny being at fault (which I expect), then that's the last time they'll see me or my money.
Of course, what money is that, is to be determined.

So far 2011 has been the year straight from hell to me, and it can kiss my rear and go straight back as far as I'm concerned.

How many sleeping pills need I take to hibernate straight through til January?
Eh, no matter, can't afford them right now anyway.

G'nite y'all, sorry bout the rant, but I had to vent

I'm definitely late to the party, but that's awesome. How'd you do that?

    Point.

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah! :scared001

Wow. That's a remarkable series of events. When it rains, it pours, huh? Think of those little pumpkin cookies. They'll be back soon!

    Today feels Mondayish to me...

You must not have heard my rant about Tuesdays... I'm convinced Tuesday is the worst day of the week, and I have the rationale to back that statement up.

Ugh, it looks like Jim hasn't had any better luck. . Sorry to hear that.

It was a pretty busy but nothing too special weekend here. Drove 5+ hours on Friday to get to the campground. Lucky us, our site was in the middle of a cub scout gathering and they were running around loud and everywhere. We were shocked that so many of them just ran and rode their bikes through our spot. Saturday went to the zoo in Cincinnati (wife has been talking it up for 17 years...), eh... it was a zoo and very expensive day... It wasn't a bad zoo but we have good zoos that are a lot closer. One of the points of going there was for the zoo baby program. The Easter Bunny had given the daughter an adoption packet for the baby Giraffe, Zuri. Zuri broke her leg on Friday and wasn't available to be seen on Saturday... :(

Drove 5+ back today, stopped to break up the trip at Wolf Park, but it was hot, the wolves were mostly inactive. Got to see the main pack rip up a deer carcass, but then back on the road through heavy thunderstorms.. just got back..

Anniversary coming up next weekend... I don't know why we ever thought it was a good idea to get married on memorial day weekend. Everything is packed, busy, and reserved years in advance...

Well... I suppose if you reserved a room at the hospital 9 months in advance.

Yeah, I am sure that scheduling birthday activities that time of year is challenging.

    Mine was a preemie. :)

Yeah, my sister's birthday is the 26th, and she never really had birthday parties as a kid because of the holiday.

Yeah, I can certainly understand that. Although it isn't as bad getting in places, I can't celebrate my birthday anywhere near my birthday. Too many get very torqued if you celebrate a birthday near Mother's Day (it is even worse on those years where the birthday is on Mother's Day). I have been scolded, told off, etc... more that a few times for celebrating then.

I suppose it could be worse, a birthday during 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years.

 People are nutty! Like you asked to be born near Mothers Day. Geez!

    4th of July wasn't bad (Grandma's birthday)
Christmas (time) can be bad (Dad and Nephew birthdays)

Ugh... too much time alternating between driving and hiking around parks and zoo. I just got up to get something and my legs clearly said "no".

    How's Your Day? May 23 - May 29, 2011

First time I've broke the 4 mile mark while running for two days in a row this year. Should keep in good spirits through the infamous PSPT.

Loving the new Doctor Who. The whole season has been good so far. Really, the only episode that was only good, instead of great, was Curse of the Black Spot. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the second part of the current 2-parter turns out.

I haven't commented much here, but I must say I'm really enjoying the new job. It's more hands-on, which I like, and I feel like I'm really making a difference.

Enough about me, how you doing this week?
(Jim, please give us some good news - we know you need it)

I hear you. Today's our 13th anniversary, and if we'd given it much foresight, we'd have either pushed back a few weeks, or a few weeks early.

We had no idea what my job would be, but given that we knew my wife would be a teacher, and end of May would always be end of school year madness, just wasn't good planning.
Plus, all the immediate family birthdays this month, and my parents' anniversary....hecticness

Oh well, she's put up with me for this long, I can't complain really

    Dear Monday,
I want to somewhat apologize to you for all the things I've recently dumped on you as being your fault, as I now realize that most of them probably aren't your fault at all.
It would seem that the calendar year 2011 is at fault. I am tempted to describe 2011 A.D. as the Monday of years, but seeing as I'm offering an apology to you, Monday, that just doesn't seem right to do.
Please accept my apologies for the things I've attributed to you that weren't your fault.
For the things that were your fault, however....GO SUCK EGGS, AND GET THE HE11 OFF MY LAWN!

    Jim

Have any of you tried one of these for grinding coffee? I've been using one for a few weeks now and love it. It works really well for drip to espresso range grinds. I'm not sure how well it would work for French Press as the mechanism feels wobbly when going any coarser than a typical drip grind (what I normally use) and reports are the grind gets uneven at really coarse settings. I bought this when my last electric grinder burned out the motor. I was tired of buying a new grinder every year and didn't want to pay ~$200 for a grinder with a motor that would last. It's not for everyone as it adds a couple minutes of manual labor to the coffee making process, but that doesn't bother me.
