I'm sure sharpness is the real factor. I do have a certain Joseph Rodgers with ivory scales that has a very narrow profile which I had relegated to display because I didn't want to risk damaging the scales and because it is so skinny, but now that I'm getting more confident at honing, I may just give it a go...
