March 21 SOTD Schick Sunday

I normally do late afternoon shave to prepare for Sunday evening services, but decided to get to it this morning. I picked out the Stirling set because I hardly use it and I figure why not smell great. It is a wonderful scent. I should use it more often because it is a smaller tub and would be easier to finish it. Did a 2 pass shave with plenty of buffing to get a BBS shave without any drama. I may have one or two shaves left with the blade, but we shall see. Applied the witch hazel, the balm and the BoS aftershave to end this glorious shave. Have a very nice Sunday guys!

I have a relatively small straight razor collection compared to some of my friends which consists primarily of vintage straights. Until yesterday I owned one modern artisan straight, a Rigarazor 15/16. As a long time custom knife collector I’ve been a fan of pattern-welded Damascus and Wootz steel blades, and when I started hanging out on some of the FB straight razor sites I began to notice the work of Victor Creazzi. What particularly caught my eye was the manner in which he built his “Fancy” razors with a monosteel edge welded to the Damascus billets he builds from scratch. My son, who has his own forge, and hopes to become a full-time bladesmith when he retires in 15 years, tells me that building a razor in the manner of Mr. Creazzi’s self developed SanMai method is not a trivial undertaking and reflects true razorsmithing mastery! I concur! Being retired since 2012 and on a fixed income I have lusted after one of Victor’s blades, a razor he named “Bone Mosaic”.

As the months passed, I began to accumulate the funds for my down payment, all the time hoping it wouldn’t sell. Since retiring I have joined the faculty of a small business college in Philly. After agreeing to teach a recent senior seminar, I knew I would be able finally acquire my dream razor which was still available. I contacted Victor, explained my situation, and he graciously agreed to accept payment in two parts. The razor arrived a few days early from Colorado yesterday. I will admit, I’ve handled quite a few pattern-welded Damascus knife blades over the years, but never a razor crafted so exquisitely! The attention to detail and the absolute perfection of the edge which I examined under a USB microscope blew me away! But the shave was in a class by itself. Victor’s razors apparently have a reputation for singing, and it’s well-deserved. “Bone Mosaic” belted out the ‘Buttering Toast’ refrain through each of the three passes leaving me with the kind of mug shave I’ll keep touching throughout the day.

As it turned out, the entire shave turned out to be epic, as @Keithmax of TSD is wont to say when referencing a memorable shave. My new MrEE (@MrEE) blue aluminum handled brush fitted with a SynBad knot performed brilliantly with my regular MWF. It’s my third brush from Evan all of which are great performers. The dome shave featured my Barbasol Floating Head safety razor which dates to the third decade of the 20th century. These 90 some odd year old safety razors have developed a reputation for extreme shaving efficiency; one that’s well deserved and should be respected. When I first acquired the razor a few years ago I learned early on that if my attention wandered, she’d bite like a jealous woman! Having been properly schooled by Madame Barbasol, I paid her the attention she desires, and was rewarded me with a two pass ATG porcelain smooth result that was in keeping with the fantastic mug shave that preceded it. I feel refreshed, clean, and oh-so-smooth!

BLADE: Feather DE
PREP: Cold water rinse rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE Blue Anodized Aluminum LE #5 fitted with a SynBad Knot

POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Osage Rub and Cremo Cooling Post Shave Balm.

The F400 beat the breaks off of the Imperial. Let just say my bowl was running over.

I have had this Stahly head for a while but I did not have the Stahly handle till one popped up on Ebay for cheap. The only problem was that it was listed as not working and that was correct. It will not wind up and the mechanism is locked. My neighbor repairs clocks and said he will give me a hand with it when I get it apart. A future project but it should be fun. I thought the Stahly would be cumbersome to handle but surprisingly this was not the case. The handle is about 3 1/4 inches long. Comparison with the Karve.

The handle diameter is large but not bad to handle. Three smooth passes. It would have been a real neat shave if the mechanism would work. Alum was a little warm but this is a heavy razor.

A little witch hazel and a few squirts of American Tobacco.

Another run with the Streamline and what a difference a fresh new blade is. This thing is built like a tank and with the heft you can use a light touch and it runs thru the whiskers like (insert your favorite analogy here) I made more of an effort to hydrate my face due to the shorter and stiffer stubble. Used the Kiel's Cleanser from Rob (ExtraProtein) and still had to move slowly with the razor around the mouth on the ATG pass because of the Kevlar buggers. If I took that approach though it scythed thru what was there and I am as slick skinned as an eel. Finished up with Dragonsbeard SFS and the MIB Essence from BVLGARI and I am smooth and smelling good for this mornings services. Have a Stellar Day Everyone !!!

A&E L’Orange Verte

Moving a little slow this morning. I cooked breakfast for the wife and then worked on some stuff around the house. I reached in the back of the shave cabinet and pulled out the A&E L'Orange Verte for today's shave. The scent is similar to Fine L'Orange Noir but more smokey and earthy. The PAA ShaveRite 210 did a wonderful job loading and lathering. Fortunately the funk from the knot was much less today. Three passes and touch ups ended in a near BBS shave. A splash of the L'Orange Verte aftershave left me feeling and smelling fantastic. Now I need to spend the afternoon trying to catch up on work. I hope everyone has a blessed Sunday.
