Gentlemen, once again I am reaching out to the experienced razor honing experts of all that needs sharpened.

When your razor is on the whetstone, How the heck do you stop getting micro scratches on your blades?

Again, I thank you for your wisdom.

Pics of the scratches, and where on the blade??

    Hi Dalton,

Thanks for taking a look. I keep the stones wet. No matter how little pressure I apply, these scratches keep coming up.

This is just on this one single razor right,,, not on all of them you are honing ???

Not all but a few of them. Seems to be the thinner, lighter weight blades.

Something is very, very wrong. Your stone shouldn't be making contact with the blade that far from the edge.

That's what I thought. I have one piece of electrical tape on the spine. But that far up made me lap the stone level, which it was. No humps etc. in the stones.

    @Claude Stewart
You aren't using one of those Convex Hones are you??
Just how much pressure are you putting on these blades??

No convex. Not much. Light then to weight of blade.

Are you running off the edge of the hone?? Making contact with the corner??

That may be it. But I round all four edges of my stones to stop a blade from doing just that.

I’ll have to see if there is a burr on the stone.

    A bit baffling???

Can you post a video of how you are using the hone??.

If you place a rectangular hone, short end up. We will call that North. Then the other short end will be South. Do your razors, at anytime, run off the North end of the stone, making contact with that, or the N/E corner of the stone??

off the north end, more than likely that’s it. Unconsciously letting the razor glide off the edge is probably doing it. When I pay attention, I stop close to the edge. Last night, I caught myself letting it go over and raising it after no contact.

Thank you Dalton. Appreciate your wisdom and help.

Just a thought, you could when the hone is dry, try putting a piece of tape on the last 1/4” of the hone end. If you hit that when you hone, you have your answer.

You should be coming off the sides of the hone, either E or W depending on your stroke
It also concerns me that the scratches are straight from bevel to spine, there should be a slight angle unless you are going straight up and down the hone..
