You have some great feedback from Karl, Billy and Steve, and if I could add on a bit.

I am a fan of old Sheffield’s, both the looks and the history... and some of the old, big choppers can be fun to modify if you get them cheap with cracks... so much steel to play with. :)

If you jump in, lower your expectation’s bar because you may deal with slight twists and “unique” geometry... but that is some of the fun with these pieces. I’m a W&B fan, having close to 50, but that is because there are so many out there, and they cover all the shapes, sizes and grinds.

If we can help assess, don’t hesitate to ask.

    50?!!! Wow!
    That’s cool.
If I come across a good deal on a W&B, I’ll probably grab it.

I just bought this one. I’m stoked to see it. (eBay grab)[IMG]

Razor prices are nuts for some reason, as are many things in the past year. A Spanish seller had a Gen 1 Filarmonica Especial with light wear go for $860. I was offered $600 for a mint Sub Cero a year ago and prices are up 20% or more since (I declined the offer). A restored Heljestrand M.K. 33 in tortoise is available for $900. It’s almost like Wade and Butchers after the Bond movie ‘Skyfall’.

There are other venues for obtaining desirable razors, with varying levels of risk, but probably the best way in the west is a network of like-minded friends and dealers. You’re here, so you have a good start. I hope that you find some really nice ones!

Having said all that, you can justify spending more on a razor if you buy fewer of them. Like most everyone else, when I was learning to shave, hone, and learning what I liked, I bought many user grade razors, all sorts of grinds and widths. A lot of them, but cheap razors.. Now, I buy a few high grade razors, the money/year isn’t much more, and manageable. I still have a weakness for old frame backs and swayback English shorties, and will buy one with little wear even if it isn’t cosmetically good, though these don’t cost much.

    Good hunting @Redfish Rick

    Thank you so much!
This has been one of the most helpful and positive groups, I’ve joined on the interwebs.
I am fond of the solingens.
I’ve got a soft spot for Bokers, as I got hooked on their pocket knives.

    Thank you, everyone!
