Tom, it holds a very sweet edge! I touched it up with a new slate Glen had recommended, and then finished it on Howard Schlecter’s pasted constroption, a device I’ve really come to appreciate. Can’t use hanging strops because of my Parkinson’s. Just a great shave!
Today’s mug shave featured my Genco 35. The steel in this razor is very fine grained and really holds a great edge. The dome shave featured the Colonial Silversmith.

Off with the full beard, my face is now fully naked. It has been a while since I did a full face shave. I had a very smooth 2 pass shave, that left me BDBS. There’s some nice looking gear lately, gentlemen. Including the pup Hans! Testing out a 6x3 slate, sourced from an acquaintance of Glen - allegedly a piece of Italian slate from a pool table. And a new JNat. This is actually yesterday’s shave with the slate edge and it was excellent - details in the honing thread. Soap was Stirling Lime and the AS was Myrsol Limon, a great hot weather pair, and a Keyhole 3 did the lathering honors.
@Steve56 Steve, I have a piece of that slate! It performed very nicely for me! I'll be interested in your thoughts.
Jeff, the slate is a winner - I’m looking forward to more edges with it. Make sure you have a well prepped edge, hit the slate, and I doubt that you’ll need the pastes. Jamie Mahoney has gotten me into a rattler mood, and I only have a small number of them. This one is a 7/8 Gauthier from Pont St Esprit, undoubtedly a Thiers Issard, scaled in Turkish burl by Alfredo. Soap was Mitchell’s Wool Fat lathered with a Duke 3 copy in 2-band, and a splash of Myrsol Blue gave me the powder fix for the day.
Thanks, Steve, but the constroption and the finish on the roo-skin bench strop are all part of the fun for me!
A small number is many more than me! I only have one, a Frederick Reynolds 5/8 still in its original tortoise/horn? scales. I do enjoy the shave with it, but it’s nowhere near as pristine as your example. It’s a bit of a wavy blade, so honing it is always an adventure!
