The Haul: August 2021

Friday mail call is from Amazon; today I got the Merkur 1904 closed comb razor.

 

That's exactly what I just did Mike, Yeti type cup and all... But I also added some cleaning vinegar to the Dawn hit water. Hopefully after a few hours of good soaking, it will be good to use.

Came in yesterday. The Volga is in real good shape. The Gillette red and black set is a nice example and the travel set I’m told is probably from Europe. Not sure the case needs work but the razor is in pretty good shape.

Hopefully it worked Jody. Did you have any luck with the mechanism freeing up?

 

Yeah, it didn't do much good. It's still serviceable but definitely not simple twist to open and open. It opens about halfway and the closing is "harsh" so much so that I have to hold the blade in place because it doesn't close correctly and causes the blade to move around. Once it's fully closed with the blade in place, it's usable. So definitely have my eye out for another one. I don't care about the plating, I just want it to open and close smoothly and correctly.

Today's mail call all the way from jolly England... Small but significant!

NOS correct English NEW GILLETTE BLADE blades to complete my №. 88 set!

Old advertisements show that these sets came with either three of these blades or three of the English BLUE GILLETTE BLADE blades. Odd Gillette only included 3 instead of a packet of 5. I chose to get these NEW blades instead of the GILLETTE BLUE blades because of the matching green color to the shipper box.

My big $15 spending spree
The single ring appears not to have been used in the past couple of years. Look at the blade that was in it
Finally found me an old working men’s watch. I love this style. Gave it a little shake set the time and it is still running 3 hours later.


I will be giving the razors their customary baths. I think I will leave the patina on the single ring.
