I am happy that you are enjoying the Essence, Joe. I am shocked that a Gillette Silver Blue blade gave you a better shave than a Feather. In any event, you had a fantastic shave!

SOTD TUESDAY MORNING, AUGUST 17, 2021

This morning I selected the D.H. Nichiri Tokusen 6/8 for my mug shave. My son has a very large Japanese straight razor collection accumulated over two decades of straight shaving. I asked him, based on what held learned, what was his favorite razor. He just smiled at me and asked me who my favorite child was? I got it, but asked which razors he enjoyed shaving with most. Without hesitation he replied, “Hoshi Tombo 8000, Iwasaki, Saito SK2, any of his Tanifujis, and any of his Diamond Hayashis.” He, of course qualified it by mentioning a few others. Since that conversation I have acquired, with his guidance, a Saito SK3, a Tanifuji Airi, a Hoshi Tombo 8000, and a Diamond Hayashi Nichiri Tokusen which I shaved with this morning.

I’ve shaved quite a bit with this razor, and realized during the third pass that it definitely was time for a touch up. So this afternoon it will visit the Naniwa 12k and then the 9 Ball slate. Despite the tugging, the razor has gone for close to 10 months without a touch up, so it’s time, and still delivered what many might consider a great shave. Thanks to the Italian blood on my mother’s side, I have heavy whiskers. So extra sharp is the state I like my edges in, and that’s the condition to which I need to return this edge.

My maintenance routine, thanks to my son, pretty much ensures a nice buttery smooth edge. He’s pushing me to acquire a few of his jnats, but I ‘m very happy with the finish I’m getting from the Naniwa and new 9 Ball slate. He honed all of my Japanese razors with the exception of the Hoshi Tombo on his jnats. In all honesty, I saw no difference in the edge on my new Hoshi and my son’s jnat edges.

The noggin shave featured my favorite modern injector razor, the SS Supply. I did own a Pal Adjustable and was recently gifted the new Parker Adjustable by my grandson, but the Supply on the three dot plate gives me the closest shave of any of them. The only comparable vintage injector is my Schick E Type. In any case, two ATG passes easily put the baby to bed. I feel cool, clean and smooth.

RAZOR: D.H. Nichiri Tokusen 6/8 (Mug), SS Supply V2 (Dome)
    BLADE: Schick B-20 Proline Injector
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE Knurled Aluminum Handle Hybrid #007
    CREAM: Nancy Boy Signature Scent
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Nancy Boy Signature AS Balm.

The first shave with the Feather was better than the second. The first two shaves with the GSB were better than either of the Feather shaves. Very close on each first shave.

    Shavette Shave # 144

    Rating: 5 / 5

    Razor: Tedalus Essence
    Blade: Gillette Silver Blue
Brush: Whipped Dog Butterscotch 24 mm
Lather: Ginger's Garden Obsession Type (1508.5 Project)
    Aftershave: Obsession A/S Balm
    Additional Care:
    Stirling Alum Block
    Thayer’s Witch Hazel - Original

Another fantastic shave with the Essence using the GSB. This blade has three shaves under it’s belt, two Essence and one Focus Slim Al R 28. The resulting shave is nothing less than BBS or DSS (Dolphin Skin Smooth). No need for a Feather Super. Sorry Jeff, @jgreenepa. Can’t get closer than this.

Thanks guys. I apparently walked through a bunch while wearing Crocs and shorts after my yard work and helping the guys with the trees and had no idea I was in the thick of things without the proper coverage. Showed up on Saturday really escalated on Sunday and Monday while working. This too shall pass! Everybody have an awesome day!
