What Straight Razor Did You Use Today?

After almost a 2 year search, I finally found my Filarmonica in Japan in the condition and price I’d hoped for. It is a second generation 13P Novodur Jose Monserrat Pou. It arrived almost two weeks early, and passed the styrofoam peanut test right out of the box. Unlike even some modern artisan makers, the blade lies flat and true and possesses an almost invisible bevel along the full length of the blade. Great mug shave today!

RAZOR: Filarmonica Novodur 13P (Mug), GE Jones Shake Sharp (Dome)
BLADE: 2 Stacked Feather DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Viking Silvertip Badger
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Cremo Cooling Post Shave Balm.

Filarmonicas in good condition aren’t cheap, but I’d rather have one than a new modern razor, they’re never warped, mis-ground, etc.

 

Thanks, Steve! You’re spot on! It lays flat as a pancake on the stones, and the bevel is tiny and uniform along the full length of the blade! I’m glad I waited. Thank you for your thoughts and guidance along the way. I’ve just finished a mini buying spree (4 Swedish razors, a Gipson, and am waiting for a new custom from Yurii Kravchenko in 7/8. It’ll have a Barber’s notch, and opposing thumb and index finger notches on the tang. I’m hoping it’ll be more comfortable in these old arthritic hands.

 

For a big blade this razor is surprisingly easy and effortless to maneuver - definitely a favorite. Very, very smooth result

Any Tanifuji is a great razor according to my son who has a huge Japanese straight collection. Old thing, indeed!
