  1. I'm hoping the upgrade tonight got us back on track.
  2. FF with no problems here. Even when I used IE back a few months ago I had no problems with TSD.
  3. Today has been better after that one outage. No problems tonight. Good on ya.

I understand from another thread that they suffered an attack on their servers recently. This is a recent problem. Apparently not suffered by all however which is kind of weird if you ask me.
  4. We all had problems when the attack was occuring.
  5. Yep.

It's the upped security sparky had to put in place that caused some folks trouble.

During the attack we all had trouble.
  6. The attack brought things to a near crawl for everyone. Once I found it, the attack was stopped right away, but my security was so good, that it kept some of our members out too. :ashamed001

In a nutshell, the server determines how many active connections each ip has with the server. If an ip has too many, they are kicked off for a couple minutes (from TSD, and all our affiliated sites).

    --Nerdy uncool details below---
A DDoS attack is where multiple computers and ip's flood the server with activity (maybe random page views or something), in an attempt to overwhelm to computer to the point of total failure for all.

Normally, this sounds really cut and dry. If you have one ip with 125 simultaneous connections to the server, that would likely be an enemy attack.

Unfortunately there's an exception. Sometimes when you view images that aren't stored in your browsers cache, each one of those images uses a connection... you could real easily ring up a pile of server connections. Just about everything counts as an image, all the way down to smilies. Every minute, the server scans the logs looking for an ip with what I define as too many connections, and takes the appropriate action. Please don't let this change what you do here. I want all of you to continue using the site normally.

It's taken some ridiculous tweaking, to find the magic number for simultaneous connection attempts. Now that I finally got it, the server groaned down from the load of filtering all those ip's. I "pimped up" the server a good bit tonight, and installed a huge chunk of ram. The processing power is solved, we should have more than enough.
  7. My FF having no problems, tried Opera, no problems

Tried Chrome awhile back, quickly deleted it...yuck

Shep, you may try putting portable FF on a flashdrive for use at work, be sure and use Foxmarks to keep all your favorites synched
  8. This actually sounds promising and interesting, but I have no idea how to accomplish it. First, where does one get mobile FF? Second, how does it work on the other computer? You just plug it in, find the device, click the FF icon and that's it? Seems too easy. How big of a flash drive would I need? What about the firewalls and security setup on the current computer; is the mobile browser subject to them or does it bypass it all?

As you can see I know just enough to be dangerous. Tracy this could be the solution to your work-posting problems as well.
  9. The problems I am seeing are intermittent. I use both firefox and chrome, but have only noticed problems with firefox so far. If I make a post, or send a PM, sometimes it will take a long to display the confirmation or go to the page again. In that time I can open a new tab and see that my message already posted, even though it has not responded on my end. It was bad a couple weeks back, now I see it about once a day.
  10. http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable

You can get firefox portable there. Than just install it to a usb drive. 128MB should be plenty. You can get a 256mb to be safe for very cheap at this point. Might as well spring for a 512 or a gig in case you want to throw some other stuff on it. Just install it to the key drive and your ready to go.
  11. :sihns011

by all means, you can get 2 gig for under $10 now, might as well go with it, and install the rest of the portable apps while you're at it
  12. :sihns011 Not in the last few days though.

Unless you happen to work where I do. They disable the use of flash drives on all of our PCs. Wouldn't matter anyway, I get a warning pop up when I try to access TSD on my work PC (IE is all I have there). For some reason, I guess they don't think shaving is work-related. I don't get it...I have to shave before I go to work...ya know?
  13. My boy is using IE and is having problems.
  14. And then I just plug in the device, click on the FF icon and a browser opens? Also what about the other part of my q...firewalls and security settings? Will they have to be tweaked to allow this thing or will it function pretty much as the installed browser on the computers hard drive? Thanks for the info gents.
  15. No problems with Opera here ;)
  16. should just function as normal, might notice performance issue as it loads, running off an external drive, but I've never noticed a major issue...depends on the machine, burnWood and all :D
the only issue you should worry about is if your computer is locked down for some reason to not allow usb drives as mentioned before-in your line of work, that may be a real possibility, but if you've used a flash drive before, it should work fine. It's hard to tell without knowing what your network admin has configured, but under a normal situation there's nothing for you to do but plug in the drive and go
  17. Certainly sounds like things are closer to norm again (although nor perfect).
  18. I've never had a problem viewing TSD, and I use many platforms and browsers:

Mac OS X: Safari, FireFox, and Opera
Mac OS 7.5.5: Internet Explorer 4.5.1
    Windows Me: FireFox and Opera
    Puppy Linux: SeeMonkey, FireFox
    Debian Linux: IceWeasel, FireFox
  19. I just picked up a great quality flash drive from Newegg.com for $10.47.

Price is not an issue. Flash drives are cheap these days.
  20. IE was being a royal pain in the butt on this site last night. I couldn't respond to anything and slow as hell. I use FF on two other systems with a widget to sync bookmarks.
