SOTD SATURDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 9, 2021

On this 9th day of OC October, a rainy Saturday morning, I decided on one of my favorite Japanese razors for the mug shave. My son was most gracious in gifting this DH Nichiri Tokusen 6/8 silver steel razor to me from his collection of well over 100 Japanese razors. I’ve maintained the magnificent edge he put on it with his jnat progression. The mug three pass shave was a pleasure with the Traveling Wilbury’s “Handle with Care” playing in the background. In fact, it was really a two pass shave with some minimal neck buffing and flatblading making up the third half pass to level smooth the recalcitrant, swirling neck stubble on either side of my Adam’s Apple.

My mug shave yesterday was superb and featured the Swiss LeCoultre Rt & Cie 6/8 frameback straight razor. So in keeping with that Swiss theme I grabbed my Leresche 51 safety razor, a simply top flight whisker destroyer, for this morning’s noggin shave. LeResche razor production spanned 76 years from 1894 to 1970. They manufactured straight razors and safety razors. The safety razors included a hoe style SE entitled “LeFrancais”, and many DE razors, the stars of which were their 77 and 51 models. My hefty 51 Luxe model weighs in at 79 grams, comparable to a Gillette Fatboy, and always delivers a very smooth two pass ATG dome shave as it did this morning. I feel velveteen smooth from the shoulders up!

RAZOR: DH Nichiri Tokusen 1000 6/8 (Mug), Leresche 51 Luxe Model.
    BLADE: Feather DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Blue Resin Badger made by my son
    SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Cremo Cooling Post Shave Balm.

Mag-T/Treet Falcon/Il Coloniali Mango. How much do I dislike this razor? Let me count the ways..it looks cheesy, the plating does not inspire confidence. There is too much play on the plate's posts, so there is no assurance that exposure will be even on both sides unless extreme care is taken to center it before dropping the cap. The magnet is way too strong to allow any adjustment once the cap is anywhere near the plate. It's an aggressive shave even with even exposure but not in a good way. There are smooth and efficient razors, this is not one of them. There's lots of what people call chatter and easy to skip and nick yourself. Or myself at least. I did get a close shave but did not enjoy the experience a bit . Oh and the blade will sometimes stick in the cap and is a bitch to remove. Mag-T has a 10 day refund policy which applies only if the razor is unused. Lolz.

I finished with the vowel-less Chinese magnetic adjustable thing (SMNRN??) which does things right.[IMG]

Sorry your shave didn’t go well, Jeff! Given your treasure trove of exotic and hard-to-find safety razors, I’m sure tomorrow’s shave will more than make up for today’s! Enjoy your Saturday!

I have a Schick G from @Screwtape too! I don't find it to be as efficient as the MMOC, so it doesn't see much use these days!

I find that a prefer OC razors (Fatip Grande & MMOC) more than closed comb razors because they tend to clean the lather from my face better... The fact that the lather passes through the comb seems to help the blade swipe it off more cleanly... Could be imagining things, though!
