Bluetooth hearing aids are even worse. Facial expressions, and you can hear one half of the argument. If you are lucky, you'll catch their eye, and they'll make a phone gesture with on hand, while mouthing the silent but identifiable phrase, "I'm on the phone." They'll still look crazy.
