SOTD FRIDAY MORNING, JANUARY 21, 2022
Well, today I finished my Japanese straight razor riff with the Tanifuji Airi 1000 11/16, the razor that hooked me on Japanese straights. I remember asking my son about the unusual blade shape. My son, Ben, of the huge Japanese Straight Razor collection explained the Kamisori design connection, and urged me to snap this one up. I’m glad I did.
Ben originally put a jnat edge on it. It was ok, but it has since been through a Naniwa progression, a Shapton progression, a coticule, and finally my Jasper and 9 Ball Slate. This is the razor I learned to hone on. It’s always shaved well, as it did this morning. Two and a half passes and my mug was “smooth as a peach” to quote my Swedish friend with the German name, Hans.
Like many of you, I’ve modified many of my safety razors. The dome shave today featured my 2011 Muhle R41. I never liked the handle it came with, so I swapped it for a Weber Bulldog style handle that’s meatier, and feels much better in hand. I’ve been hoarding my Sharp Star blades since 2012. I used to use them in my 52 yr old Schick Krona.
I always liked these blades, both nicely sharp and smooth. Not as sharp as my regular Feather or Kai blades, but they more than make up for it in smoothness. As smooth as a Voskhod, but definitely sharper. They pair nicely with the 2011 R41. I think I prefer them in this razor over my regular Feather blades. Anyway, two ATG passes and I was velveteen smooth from noggin to neck!
