Eric, Joe is spot on about getting that razor properly honed. There are the expert honemeisters like @gssixgun or others here who would hone it to shave ready for just the cost of postage. Before you begin your focus, make sure the razor is honed and you have a proper strop to maintain it. Joe and I differ on this point, but I think a properly honed straight is more forgiving for someone just getting started than a shavette. I started on a regular straight and later transitioned to a barber’s razor which in my opinion is far less forgiving.

Great shave, Eric! Only 10 shaves on a Personna 74!!! ;) Just kidding that’s great! My friend David Place shaves with them exclusively, and gets a ridiculous number of shaves per blade. He probably has a much lighter beard. I was never able to get more than about 7 or 8 before they started to pull. That’s what’s so great about our hobby! Everyone’s different! Enjoy your shaves!

Another great mug shave with the straight razor that started me off, the Dovo Special! The factory edge when this razor was new was anything but shave ready. My son reset the bevel and honed it up for my use 7 yrs ago. After my own trials and tribulations with it initially, we’re now on great terms. I reset the bevel the way I like it a few years ago, and have been maintaining it ever since. The shave went well, two and a half passes left yours truly delightfully smooth.

My dome shave with the Colonial Razor Silversmith was every bit as good. This DE safety razor just feels right in hand! Loaded with a Feather DE it never fails to clear away my dome stubble effectively. Kirk and Kyle Evans build fabulous shaving tools. I own both their AC General and the DE Silversmith, and am on deck to receive the new aluminum DE currently in the design phase. I have no doubt that the new razor will be a winner given their track record! Two ATG passes cleaned my dome stubble down to the scalp line leaving me velveteen smooth from neck to noggin.

RAZOR: Dovo Special 5/8 (Mug), Colonial Razor Silversmith (Dome)
    BLADE: Feather DE ( Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a heavy scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE LE #007 Knurled Aluminum Handled Hybrid Knot
    CREAM: Nancy Boy Signature Scent
POSTSHAVE: Cold water with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Nancy Boy Signature Scent AS Balm.

Curious to hear your thoughts on Sheep. Personally, I like it, like a lot! Stirling is the only soap maker I can think of that makes three different unscented soaps (not different bases, PAA does that). Two of Stirling's unscented are top drawer for me.

And the Type G, wow, what a great razor. I have two more inbound, as my January No Buy didn't go well, so I decided that if I could find an amber handled Type G (a G8 by Appleby) I'd try it. Well, I found an amber handle (I think) and a Canadian Type G. I really believe my best shaves for the last 6 months have been with single edge razors. Why not add more?!

    DE Shave # 382 - Birthday Shave

    Rating: 5 / 5

Razor: Gillette Flare Tip SS (1959 E-1)
    Blade: Shark Patinum
Bowl: Doug Smith Pottery (Birthday Gift)
Brush: Sawdust Creation Studio Old Cahaba
    Lather: Stirling Spice
    Aftershave: B & M Reserve Spice
    Additional Care:
    Stirling Alum Block
    Stirling Unscented Glacial Balm
    Thayer’s Witch Hazel - Original
Each year on my birthday I select one of two birth year/quarter Gillette razors in my den to do the honor of the day’s shave. This year I choose the Gillette Flare Tip. The razor coupled with the Shark Platinum blade delivered a wonderfully smooth and close shave. The boar brush whipped up a nice lather with the assistance of the new shave bowl.

I had a nice breakfast with my oldest daughter and will be have sunnier with the missus and my son at a restaurant of my choice later this evening. Joe, @Trigger, do you have any restaurant suggestions. Currently considering Carnivale, Margaritas Cafe or Don Quixote.

I hope you all have a great day gentlemen.
