The silver plate from behind the mirror is breaking down. The most common cause is moisture, like being in a bathroom.
I'd disagree, look at just about any antique mirror and you'll see the coating deteriorating behind the glass. Typically caused by chemical reaction with the adhesive which is why so many of these executive mirrors are affected. Glue compounds and long term effects can be tricky. One of my customers delivered the headliners for the Durango to Chrysler. They lost the contract when they switched to a less expensive adhesive, and experienced a 70% field failure rate within 10,000 miles...sagging headliners. I'm just glad I can see anything in this mirror!
I've worked in the glass business for many years, home, auto, etc., since I was 17 years old. Yes the adhesive can break down, especially silicone, which is a no-no. But most mirrors I've replaced were bathroom ones damaged from constant moisture.
