Hi! I'm new on the forum and thought I say hi and I also have a question.
I live in Sweden and not many stores have a wide selection of straight razors. I came across theinvisibleedge, courtesy of this forum, and found myself with alot of options.
I'm new to cuttin' me own throat (any Terry Pratchett readers in here?) but i like to start and try to master, or at least handle, this technique.
The question is, should I go for a Dovo Shavette, Dovo around £60, a Wapienica or one of the Vintage ones they have? £60 is approx $90 for your reference.
The higher price on the vintage ones is in my opinion maybe justified because you get two. I can't put links because i haven't posted 5 times, but the ones I mean is J. Thomas Coventry 6/8".
Anyone that have experience with any of these? If not, well thanks anyway for a very good reading in here!

    Welcome aboard.

Personally, I'd pass on the Wapienica.

Which Dovo were you looking at? Is it the tortoise shell 5/8 or 6/8?

Been looking on Best Quality and Special. I know it's important to not get the budget versions of everything. But cost is a factor here I don't want to spend $200 on equipment and find that I don't like it. Rather then buy one more straight razor later on with higher quality.

I couldn't disagree more. The Wapienica is an outstanding shaver on a par with the very best razors. The price is a real bargain and it is the ideal beginners' razor because in addition to giving a great shave with even poor technique, it is also very easy to hone. The only negative is the weight of the stainless steel scales but this is easily remedied by choosing a rescaled Wapi. I don't know the other razors but I can say that I have two Dovo #41 stainless steel razors that are OK but not great like the Wapi.

Forget the Dovos, get either a Wapi or a vintage one.

Well I have know put an order on two wapsi. One that is original and one with the scales replaced. I thought the original could be a project if I didn't like the heavy weight. Thanks for the replies and the many threads about the wapsi that also convinced me!

You have stores near you with straights?! Lucky! ;)

I'd stay away from the shavettes. I used a Sanguine with a Feather AC blade several times. Then I tried a Feather AC. Very different. I've used the Feather half a dozen times or so. It take a bit of concentration. When I'm in hurry, every work day and 50% of weekends, I fall back to my DE.

One thing I did with the Sanguine was dull a blade with sand paper and practice with it. It wasn't sharp enough to shave or cut my face. But when the angle was wrong, I could feel it. I suppose I could try that with the AC.

Another trick is I kept my usual DE on hand. I gave myself permission to put the straight down and switch to the DE at any time. I found it a good way to get experience with out filleting my face

    Good luck!

Good call on the Wapis. I have heard good things about them on many forums and a lot of the guys here really like 'em. If you end up liking our little madness called straight shaving, I highly recommend vintage blades from Sheffield like Wade & Butcher, Frederick Reynolds and Wostenholm.

    Welcome to TSD!

Double Arrows may be a good option as well, they cost a lot less then the Wapis...but I remember when the Wapis were first offered for sale they were like $4....

Looks like the seller ships worldwide, might be worth messaging him and seeing if he can provide a shave ready razor for you.

I'll throw in my vote for anything Swedish! The Wapis are made from Swedish steel; Gillette built an empire on razor blades from Swedish steel...

    You home fielder... :D

But that would also be a good recommendation...something like Eskilstuna steel.

HAHA, I have read all the discworld books, some of them 4-5 times. First when i read it I was like "say what?" Now when the clock is 15:49 here in Sweden instead of 04:20 and I say, would NEVER let him shave me :D

It would be so nice to one day have a Swedish str8, but I'm a little afraid now in the beginning, spending money, on something that have to be honed from a blunt stage. I'm very acited but now there is the dreaded waiting!

Quick question. Anybody have any experience from the invisibleedge? How long it takes for them to ship it out and so on? The places I usually order from is very quick so I have ants in my pants now. Haven't even gotten any order confirmation... Crying like a little girl over here, HAHA:cool:

The owner is a member of TSD. I know someone around here has ordered from him. Can't remember who.

    Sorry.

  19. I concur. I love my Wapi. :D

I have placed several orders with the Invisble Edge. He ships quickly. The lack of an order confirmation is because he's a small operation and can't afford a web site with bells and whistles. He's really reliable, don't worry.
