Is there a site that has a list of the different effects certain oils have on the skin? I'd like to see if there are other oils I could look into to add or substitute into my mix.

there are several, check early on in this thread, I think I posted a bunch of links about OCM, and I'm pretty sure in some of those are some references. Unfortunately, I don't think I bookmarked any of the sites that describe the oils and all, but I think they're covered pretty good in those other links. Worst case, you can always google OCM recipes

    From my bottles....

    Grapeseed Oil
    Jojoba Oil
    Sweet Almond Oil
It's a bit of advertising, so take it with a grain of salt, but I think it explains the effects of the different oils somewhat...

HTH, and if you find anything more, please post it here....

Thanks. It's a bit of a start. I sort of found what I was looking for, but it's limited to essential oils.

The last batch of oil I whipped up has menthol. I read about being careful about how much menthol you put into things, but my brain rejected it. I sniffed the bottle... didn't seem like enough. Added more.

The stuff is crazy. In a hot shower I put the stuff on my face... it burns for a few seconds, then it's SO COLD! Lesson learned. I think there are a few menthol lovers around here that would love my recipe though. :)

My basic recipe is grapeseed and/or rice bran oil as the carrier/moisturizer, castor as the cleanser (30% or so), and a couple percent by weight of Polysorbate 20 to help it rinse off a bit.

One of these days I'll play with a bit of Jojoba, but it's a little expensive. Curiously, Jojoba isn't actually an oil, but an unusual liquid wax.

Jojoba is supposed to simulate your natural oil best from what i believe i read...correct me if i am wrong.

I think i may have used to much castor in my new batch because my nose is peeling a little bit...or i scrub to hard...we shall see...this batch is about 40% castor.

you could probably make another batch w/o the menthol and combine the two to dissipate it some, but I'm sure you already thought of that

that's my understanding of Jojoba as well
    hate that it's so expen$ive

I have to use about that much castor for it to be effective

back to harlekin's post...I'd not thought of adding menthol. I have added peppermint EO before, I like it pretty good (it's awesome in my witch hazel mix)

I've toyed with the idea of adding some crushed walnut shell to my mix for extra exfoliation, but don't think I'll do it
maybe have it in a separate container, shake a little in your hand, add a little oil mix, and make an initial scrub before the steaming...now this I may have to try

I cut it with some more RBO, but I was out of castor, so it doesn't cleanse as well. It burned a lot more before I cut the mix though. :)

I have a previous batch on the counter. My fiancee used it for a while (not sure if she still does or not, hehe) and commented that it smelled like popcorn oil. I added some vanilla fragrance, now she says it smells like butterscotch. Not ideal, but an improvement. That batch was about 40% castor and I did find it to be a bit too drying. I also got too much PS20 in that batch as it was totally experimental, which made it even more drying (you only need just enough PS20 to let it emulsify when you rinse, not enough to do any cleaning itself).

From what I've heard, Jojoba oil is the closest thing to sebum (your natural skin/hair oils) you'll find. It's very popular, but it's $17 at my local supplier whereas RBO and Grapeseed are around $5 (for 16oz).

Check Amazon... I picked up a 3 pack of 16oz bottles of Jojoba, Almond, and Grapeseed oils for just under $30 IIRC....

I've noticed now with the weather warming and humidity rising, that my face has become a little more oily. I think I need to up my castor oil amount. I was having the same peeling problem during the winter; I had to take it down to about 20%.

I like that menthol idea. I have some crystals on the way, maybe I'll throw a little in a batch to try out... :happy088

Just bumping this back to the top....

Those of you who've tried it in the last few months, what's the verdict? Staying with it, or have you moved on?

    My latest recipe:
    1 oz. Castor Oil
    1 oz. Sweet Almond Oil
    1½ oz. Jojoba Oil
    1½ oz. Grapeseed Oil

The last few batches had been only ½ oz. of the Almond Oil - in the winter I felt that the addition of it contributed to some drying. But now with summer and humidity in full swing, I decided to bump it back up a little. We'll see how it turns out... I had forgotten about the menthol addition, maybe I'll try it out now - I love the freezy face! :freezing How did you add it, Chad? Just dump the crystals in, or did you melt them down first?

Cocunut oil can be drying in large amounts. I wouldn't recommend using any more than a 25-30% ratio.

I melted the menthol crystals. I put them in a shot glass which I placed in a bowl of hot water.

I haven't done OCM in a while. I ran out of castor oil and I've been too cheap to buy more. Also, I've been using polysorbate 20 to make it rinse off more easily, but that means that it will hold water if I leave it in the shower. I would add a bit of preservative to it, but as it happens, PS20 is the only emulsifier I have and my only preservative is paraben based. PS20 unfortunately reduces the efficacy of the parabens, which means I could be spreading nasty stuff on my face. For those who don't leave the bottle in the shower this is not a concern, but I just want my OCM to be easy to use.

Interesting, Chad. I don't have any issue with it rinsing off...I just put my face under the shower head and massage with my fingers until it feels mostly gone. That's basically my prep for shaving - no hot towels or extra lathers or anything... I leave my OCM in the shower and don't have any issues....the above mixture last me about 2-3 weeks....

just remember, you DO NOT want to rinse all of it off, you want it a little oily still after cleaning - seems counter-intuitive, I know (so does OCM), but I had tremendous improvement when I let myself try it.

    +1

Are you still only doing every other day? I do it every day with my shower....but only the shower I shave after - if I shower a 2nd time during the day, I only rinse the face with water...

yeah, but then I only shower about every other day, unless circumstances call for higher frequency....:D

Has anyone tried mixing lanolin with castor oil & EVOO or any combination?

    What were the results?
