SOTD FRIDAY MORNING, APRIL 15, 2022

I’d thought I’d touched up this Wade & Butcher 7/8, but it was a bit tuggy. So last night it went back to the stones and the constroption. This morning’s mug shave checked all the boxes. There's just something about a well-balanced beautifully sharp straight razor in hand that is often beyond words. I like to think of myself as a caretaker for many of my vintage straights that shave as well for me as they did for their former custodians. Shaving with one to three hundred year old tools, and knowing they’ll be passed on through my family is a great feeling. Although this razor is nowhere near as old as some I’ve shaved with, it’s two and a half passes did the trick. My mug is as smooth as it needs to be!

The noggin tool for this morning’s dome shave was the Valet Autostrop VC4. This particular model represents the culmination of over forty years of continuous improvement by its inventor, Henry Gaisman, who died at 104 in 1974 and presented the initial offering in 1906.. All prior models sported an open comb design. The VC4 is the tenth and only model of the vaunted Autostrop line to feature a solid safety bar. All models shave well, but this model which came out at the beginning of WW2 is just an exemplary noggin shaver. When loaded with a Feather FAS-10 OR FHS-10 blade it is a superlative shaver. Two of the usual ATG passes and your happy narrator was velveteen smooth from neck to noggin.

RAZOR: Wade & Butcher 7/8 (Mug), Valet Autostrop VC4 (Dome)
BLADE: Feather FHS-10 (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a heavy scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Rooney Ebony Pure Badger
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a splash of Williams Aqua Velva (Spanish Version)
