IMG_20220502_132630_164.jpg Fourth shave on this Dorco blade, and it's doing just as well as the previous one. I could see myself buying these in bulk, but I will hold out until I have tried all the blades I'm going to try. I might get a few tucks of Sharks and/or some other blades to try as well if I decide to order a new soap or other software this month.

The shave itself went well. I decided to use the Mühle Aloe soap, and because I hadn't used the Tabac splash for a while, I used that too. No issues to report, very enjoyable shave.

    Have a great day, gentlemen!

Thanks, Joe, given the low temps this month the pool’s in progress! SWMBO is out there planting her bulbs and flowers! Right now my focus is on rebuilding the two new main shaft bearings on the supposedly “Rebuilt” transmission I purchased. My son pointed out that the main shaft bearings on the old transmission seem to be in decent shape, but I’ve already purchased a new pair. Any day now, aannnyyy daaaay nooow!

SOTD MONDAY MORNING, MAY 2, 2022

Decided to pull out the Lush Prince Shaving Cream. Although the Viking Silvertip Badger is featured in this morning’s shave, I quickly substituted my little Kent Infinity Synth. Cleaning this viscous stuff out of a Badger brush is a pain, but not out of the old early synth. This is not a shaving cream I use regularly. It’s Howard Schlecter’s main stuff. The post shave benefits even after just one shave with this therapeutic cream are pretty amazing. Many use it brushless, but it lathers and works with a synth brush as well. Whenever I shave with any non-MWF soap, but Castle Forbes or Nancy Boy, it seems to impact my skin condition. One application of this stuff kicks things back into overdrive. It’s almost too much to use regularly, but periodically does what it’s designed for.

I was fortunate to be able to purchase a NOS Diamond Hayashi Nichiri Tokusen 6/8. Its Swedish silver steel blade holds an amazing edge. My son returned my 9 Ball Slate finisher which is really all this spectacular blade needs. Eight to ten strokes last night and then to the Constroption tuned up the edge beautifully. Two and half mug passes put the baby to bed leaving yours truly velveteen smooth.

As a grumpy old shave curmudgeon, I’ve a bit of a bone to pick. I’ve noticed that many of you out there indulge in hundreds of strokes on linen then leather and then even a pasted strop. IT’S OVERKILL GUYS! As a retired guy who spent his career using the scientific method to improve processes for his clients, I would urge you to take a look at the “Science of Sharp” site. Using electron microscopy coupled with the scientific method he demonstrates that there is rarely any stropping improvement beyond about 10 strokes. In fact excessive stropping actually degrades the edge. Check it out! My edges are great after 10 strokes!

Skipped the dome shave this morning. Off to work on my TR6 transmission. Enjoy your shaves.

RAZOR: NOS DH Nichiri Tokusen 6/8 (Mug)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a heavy scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Started with Viking Silvertip Badger, but finished with An old Kent Infinity Synth
    CREAM: Lush Prince
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys WH. Finished with Krampert’s Frostbite AS Splash.

Excellent shave Jeff! I am a firm believer that there is more than one way to maintain straights.

Lovely photo, Daniel! Tabac lathers beautifully, the scent on the other hand is a different story! ;)

    Thank you, gentlemen!

I actually enjoy the scent of Tabac.

Agreed, Joe, but as a retired scientist/engineer I’ve always believed in simplicity and parsimony of resources. I get tired thinking of the hundreds of wasted strokes attributable only to anecdote instead of rigorous testing! I should change my CT to Professional Curmudgeon! ;)

I know, I was just teasing! Back in the day on this thread Charlie (@wristwatchb) would mock my use of MWF and I would do the same re: Tabac. A secret between us. I have a crock of the stuff, and do shave with it periodically as long as I can block my nostrils with cotton. ;)

    I know you were! ;)

I'm not sure if I will repurchase Tabac though. Not that there is anything wrong with it, but I have a few favorite soaps and creams that I will definetly buy again, and I want to try different ones too!

I have found that I like pretty much all the blades from Egypt. Shark is one of them. I too am trying different blades and have found many I like.

Daniel, thereks always MWF. It’s also sold and repackaged as Kent Shaving soap. Our mutual friend, Barry, (@palmolive fox) says the Kent branding is cheaper in the UK. Great stuff! It might be the same for you. For whatever reason, it $2 more expensive per puck in the States.

I like Lord Platinums, and have tried some others, but can't remember how they were. I'll have to try more!

I'm glad you have found many blades that you like!

Morning shave started with a hot washcloth on my face and then the application of the Proraso Blue which cools the face. Today's soap of choice is Chiseled Face "Sherlock" to which I added a small dollop of TOBS Almond Cream. Made rich lather again! Mixing cream & soap works great! Whipped with my Simpson "Trafalgar T3" synthetic brush. The Sherlock dominated the scent. Pepper and old books scent with a bit of tobacco added for good measure.

Razor was my Parker 87R again with a Gillette "Sliver Blue" blade (second use) These blades make the razor feel more tame than the Parker blade did. I still managed to nick myself 3 times on my upper lip! Nothing the alum bar could not handle. Slight bit of burn. The blade glided nicely. I need to back off a bit again with the pressure! It was so comfy, I got sloppy!

Finished with Proraso Protecting balm. Overall a good shave but not great. Better tomorrow!

On another note, my bike is all back together and now it's raining...but, the progressive suspension is great!
