SOTD FRIDAY MORNING. MAY 13, 2022

Happy Friday the 13th for the non-superstitious out there. I shaved my mug with what used to be my favorite vintage straight razor, the Sheffield Manhattan Cutlery 13/16, beautifully restored by David Work. I love the mug shaves this well-balanced razor delivers, and this morning’s shave may have even raised the bar. It may have had something to do with the touchup last night on the Gokumyo 20k. I’ve stopped stropping after using this stone, and had a magnificent two and a half pass shave leaving me wonderfully smooth.

Kyle Evans, one of two twin brothers who own Colonial Razor, and the designer behind the Colonial Silversmith certainly knows his business. I really enjoy shaving my noggin with this eye-catching SS DE. The head design is just perfect with either a Feather or Kai blade. I loaded a Kai blade for this morning’s dome shave. These blades are just a smidge wider than your standard DE, and are nicely sharp as well! The two pass ATG noggin shave sheared away my dome stubble like the Romans through the Sabine women! I’m velveteen smooth from noggin to neck!

RAZOR: Manhattan Cutlery 13/16, Colonial Silversmith (Dome)
BLADE: Kai DE (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a heavy scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Viking Silvertip Badger
CREAM: Nancy Boy Signature
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Nancy Boy Signature Scent AS Balm.

 

Great shave, Daniel! The R41 is renowned for its efficiency in delivering smoothness, but particularly for removing the tops of bumps and pimples in the process.

 

Great shave, Gary! You’ll see as your muscle memory improves with the DX that there’ll be less need for safety razor cleanup. Enjoy your shaves!

 

Thx, Jeff! My only problem areas are my upper lip and my chin. I went VERY careful under my nose on my lip and didn't cut myself. Minor irritation. Balm cools it.

 

Jeff... The Schick I1 injector will have a fresh Japanese Twin blade in it to get me going. He quoted in his message to me "The compatibility of later Schicks with this type of blade is as good a reason to have them as any." I shall look into a Schick Injector II Twin-blade purchase for the my future shaves.

 

My Tech. The Bic blade worked well in this razor.

Thanks Dan! Yes, the Bic blades are good! The Tech is really a small razor and light. Gentle razor but efficient

 

What I am watching to learn

 

It looks nice and many of you speak well about it. I just need to find a way to "negotiate" it better.

Very good shave today-the Stoylin Sheep/Osage Rub has proven to be a great combination for me. The brush for today was the Stoylin "No-Name" synth. Nice Loading work for the first pass. No problems to report throughout the entire shave. A triple "no" on cuts, Knicks, and Polka Dots. Another new thing I'm doing is swirling the brush back and forth at times(in the soap). I have the clockwise motion down pat. I'm also doing more up-to-down work with the razor at Cactus, especially around the Adam's Apple. Thank goodness for no cuts there. Outta This World Excellent. He is the best in the business. He's been straightshaving for over 30 years. In fact, I bought my first straight razor from his now defunct company Straight Razor Designs.

 

Didn't understand the observation. Why would I need a thermometer? It's just very cold with Cryogen, so no need for the thermometer.
