I am going by the codes on the lower plate. The top plate has no codes so, who knows? I now have 2 Techs and 3 heads & top plates. Mix and match. All pieces are nice except for one with the stamped "Gillette" rather than the sandblasted head I have on the short one. Last piece is a P2 code.

I shaved last night before bed and now, 12 hours later, I am still pretty smooth! I may wait till tomorrow to shave. I got really close and could have done the whole shave using just the open blades but, I decided to do one pass ATG using my Razorine "Flatboy". BBS shave! I really had a passable shave with just one pass. I used the DX for WTG, ATG, with the japanese style used for my upper lip. Neck and cheeks are BBS after 2 passes. But, my right side jawline is hard for me to get close using the Feather DX so, I grabbed the Flatboy. Face is still passable this morning. Amazing!

I continued the constant of Proraso Blue pre-shave. Before that I washed my face and then used the hot washcloth to prep. I am still using the "Genuine Ogallala Bay Rum" so I can fit the lid on the bowl. It's gettting there! My small stiff Simpson brush created tons of lather in my lather bowl. The 7th shave using the Feather ProGuard blade. Fresh blade in the japanese style. I did get 2 minor nicks on my upper lip! Alum bar quieted them down and plugged the leaks. I was SO close after the 2nd pass with the DX but, I missed my DE shave so, I grabbed the Flatboy to clean up my jawline. Brush squeezings used to do another face wash. Very Nice! That razor is ALWAYS pleasant to use.

My R89 will arrive today or tomorrow, and my next shave will be with it. Now I'll just have to decide which blade to use..

SOTD TUESDAY MORNING, MAY 17, 2022

This morning’s shave was close and comfortable. The mug shave featured the first Japanese razor I ever shaved with several years ago, the Tanifuji Airi 11/16 which started me down the Japanese razor rabbit hole. “Tanifuji Fukutaro”, born in 1894, was the first to start manufacturing western style Japanese straight razors. In 1918, he started his razor manufacturing company in Sumido-ku using Japanese traditional techniques and skills to build his razors with a large number of cutlery craftsman. His domestically produced western style razors using imported Swedish silver steel were perceived as sharper and superior to imported western style razors.

The manufacturing methods employed traditional Japanese sword-making technique and many of his blade shapes reflected this approach as my Tanifuji Airi razor does. Many well known Japanese razors like, Airi, Baba, Cape, Nichiri and Spalding to name a few were actually made by Mr. Tanifuji. With the rise of safety razor usage after WWII, he sold his blade manufacturing machinery to Mr. Iwasaki of Sanjo Works in the early 1950’s, although he continued to make the scales for all Iwasaki western razors until he retired in 1973. He passed away in 1990 at age 96.

The three pass mug shave this morning with my Tanifuji Airi 11/16, as my UK shave brother, Barry (@palmolive fox), would say, was “divine”. I also really enjoy my noggin shaves with the 2011 R41 which sits on a meaty Weber bulldog handle! The razor feels hefty and well balanced. Two ATG passes with a loaded Sharp Star blade left your happy narrator delightfully smooth from noggin to neck.

RAZOR: Tanifuji Airi 11/16 (Mug), 2011 Muhle R41 ( Dome)
    BLADE: Sharp Star (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a heavy scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE LE #007 Knurled Aluminum Handled Hybrid Knot
    SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys WH. Finished with Canoe Original EdT Splash.

    SRS # 689 - Lakewood Soap Week

    Rating: 5 / 5

Razor: Drew Dick 7/8” Quarter Hollow Purple Heartwood
Brush: PAA The Green Ray 24 mm
Lather: Lakewood Soap Company Prairie Song
Aftershave: Lakewood Soap Company Prairie Song Balm
    Additional Care:
    Stirling Alum Block
    Thayer’s Witch Hazel - Original

Another wonderfully close shave with the Drew Dick razor with the assistance of the fantastically slick Lakewood Soap. In my opinion, this soap base will rival any of the top tier soaps on the market today. The scent profile for this soap is a follows: “Fresh, warm notes of tobacco and old leather, herbaceous sage, crisp lemongrass, and darker undertones of patchouli, vetiver and whiskey.”

I did the usual three pass shave with excellent results. My face is smooth, irritation free and smelling great. Today I plan on enjoying the beautiful weather here on LI as I take care of some out door chores.

I hope you all have a great day gentlemen.

Very nice setup, Jeff. I am planning on using the MWF next shave. I am still really close from yesterday afternoon and can barely feel stubble. It will be either tonight or tomorrow morning. I hate having to wait! That DX gets me really close on cheeks and neck/jawline. I have done 7 shaves with that first ProGuard blade and it has not started tugging yet. I will push these blades as far as I can due to cost.

I like how that soap sounds. Sherlock has a similar scent. Tobacco, pepper, leather, & old books. I really like that one!
    Nice setup, Joe!

Terrific injector shave, Barry! That Omega Eucalyptus shaving cream sounds interesting! The only thing holding me back is the lack of menthol, but I do have M-Bomb! I may pick up a tube! Thanks for another excellent photo and your detailed commentary!

Lovely detailed commentary, Gary! Progress appears to be continuing with the DX. Consistent use will build the muscle memory skills necessary for traditional straight razors. Don’t forget to skin stretch as you use the DX. It makes a big difference, and is a habit that will benefit your safety razor shaves as well! Enjoy your day!
