SOTD SUNDAY MORNING, MAY 22, 2022

This morning’s shave featured two tried and true shaving tools. My mug shave featured a traditional vintage Sheffield wedge style straight razor by Henry Hobson, brought back into service by Len Curcuruto. I purchased this razor about a year or so ago from Len. It was advertised as “shave ready”. In all honesty, I was a bit skeptical, as I’d received another wedge from another individual represented in similar condition.

It wasn’t even close! This razor arrived with a buttery smooth edge along with instructions for maintaining it! The only spooky thing about shaving with a well-honed wedge versus a hollow ground is the silence! It shaves beautifully, but without that “Buttering Toast” refrain I’m used to with my hollow ground straights. Three passes with this very capable razor left mesmooth as a peach.

My preference in safety razors are SE’s, but there are a few vintage Gillettes like any of Gillette’s second generation of blade holders that never fail to delight. Double and Single Rings (first generation Gillettes) shave effectively, but except for the first generation Big Fellow, come in second to any of the Gillette “New” models. My 1930’s Gillette New LC Deluxe took no prisoners and totally eradicated my noggin stubble in two very smooth ATG passes leaving me velveteen smooth from noggin to neck!

RAZOR: H. Hobson Sheffield Wedge 11/16 (Mug), Gillette New LC Deluxe (Dome)
    BLADE: Feather DE (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a heavy scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE LE #005 Aluminum Handle with 24mm SynBad Knot
    SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Krampert’s Frostbite AS Splash.

Thank you Daniel. It's good that I have 2 glacial Stoylins to help me through the summer(Electric Sheep soap and Lime A.S.)

Terry, you Lucky Dog(lol). How do you get the shaving cream out of the bottle-you just pour and hope it's enough?

It's the way I like it. This weekend was great. Unfortunately, we may pay the price for a not so great Memorial Day Weekend. We'll see.

Awesome lineup and shave Terry! It's great when there is no one to interrupt you while you can take your time shaving.

Terrific shave Daniel. I can only go by my experience with Personna Hairshaper Blades and I find that they last longer. I can get 16 shaves on my hairshaper. However, I never tried the Personna DE blades. My average would be 5 shaves on a blade so it may or may not be more shaves with that DE brand.

Thank you for the compliment Barry. I had a lot of practice with over 730 open blade shaves so that kind of helps. Also, the Dovo Shavette was my first open blade razor that I have used and I took to it from day one. I just enjoy using that razor because it gives me a great shave and for sentimental reasons. This razor taught me how to have a soft touch that is so instrumental in mastering open blade shaving. The conventional wisdom is that if you master shavette shaving, then you can shave with anything and that is what drew me into straights and shavettes.

Awesome shaves Jeff! That reminds me, I have to bring out my Wosty near wedge this week.

Our southern place is in Georgia, on Tybee Island. We haven’t been there in two years! This October will mark our first return since January of 2020. I also have no straights! I do have 6 safety razors there and no straights! I hope they’re still there. It was rented, but our things are locked up in our personal closet! Still secure according to the rental mgmt outfit! We’ll see! SWMBO is worried about the condition of the place. My first wife decorated it. So worse comes to worst, she’ll be reaching into my pocket for new furniture. Savannah’s just down the road!

I went to the Supply site, John, but couldn’t find where they’re selling the new plates! I’d like to pick up the new three dot plate.

We’ll look at you, Barry! Becoming quite the injector razor collector! I don’t have one myself, but understand they’re a sweet shaver! Nothing like a great shave with a superb injector razor followed by a nice cuppa green tea to start the day off right! :happy088:

That’s probably a good move at this point. When Gary’s feeling a bit more comfortable with the DX, we can talk “flatblading”, although I know you don’t like that technique! Works real well for me!
