How does this guy sell re-plated razors for so much? I paid about that much for a close-to-mint condition rhodium-plated British #16 Aristocrat (a pretty rare razor) with case and instuctions. This is just a Fatboy, and they're all over eBay.

Cant go to ebay at work but it is my understanding that many of ebays razors are insanely priced for people who dont know better.

    Well,

It looks like he does great work and they are quite nice...sounds like he's found a way to pay for his hobby of razor restoration. :)

E-bay bidding can go pretty high sometimes as you know.....

That is a great looking Fatboy  Perhaps a better than factory finish........

To each their own, but when a common razor sells for as much as what's pictured below, merely because it was re-plated, I call that insane.

My razor didn't need no stinking re-plating! :D

    because theyre pretty.

I think Ray is right. It must be people who don't know any better. An adjustable for $145. That's beyond extreme.

EDIT: Just went back and looked at it again. I can only assume he starts the auction high due to his labor. If it's to be believed he invests a lot of labor restoring razors. I would not pay this price, but if somebody wants to it's their dime (s).

It is expensive, but i've never seen anyone doing this before. In the end, this is a good thing. These DE's we're using aren't gonna last forever. Eventually, the supply will run out (maybe not in our lifetime). He seems very honest about what's been done, so I say "Cool".

The only downside I can see, is one of these being resold by someone else, and the buyer thinking this is the original finish.

JayKay 3000 posts and all I got was this lousy title

I'm still left to wonder, wouldnt you have to disassemble an adjustable to correctly plate it? And if not, wouldn't you have to use an extremely thin layer of plating to not have to take it apart? You can buy plating kits online for not much and do the same thing.

He claims to have completely disassembled it.

The auctions are private because so many collectors complained about the adulterations so he could be bidding up his own razors, we'll never know. We do know that at one point he claimed that I was the only one to point out that these could be resold as new when I know for a fact that I was not the only one. The Fat Boy's don't bother me as much as the nickel plated Aristocrats which could be mistaken for rare pre-Presidents.

Yes Rick that is insane! :shocked029:shocked031 Altered razors should NEVER sell for anywhere near ones in original condition.

I really think he is shill bidding because every one of his auctions have higher than normal # of bids. I have seen regular original plated SS go $50+ from him. and there no box or anything, just the razor.

Wouldn't it have to be a Diplomat to trick us? It sure would throw off the untrained eye though.

There was a President with one smooth band like a notched Aristocrat, these are few and he has re-plated normal Aristocrats in nickel that are virtually indistinguishable from these rare high end shavers.

I pleaded several times for him to put an identifying mark on these, now worthless to me, razors to no avail. A little symbol under head or inside the silo doors would be the ethical thing to do.

Something is definitely not right with these auctions. Hell, I tried to sell this razor for pretty cheap, and it just languished in the classifieds -- isn't repainting the handle to look like new the same thing thing Mr. re-plater is doing?

    O2 Super Adjustable
Good finish with a bit of spotting on head. Opens, closes, and locks down smoothly. Adjustment dial clicks audibly at each setting. Tiny spot of brassing on tip of TTO knob. NOTE: The numbers and handle have been repainted. I used arcrylic nail polish on numbers, and arcrylic spray paint with an enamel clear coat on handle. The paint is 100%, and will not wash off with soap and water. Picture #3 shows the repainted handle (left) vs. original. If anything, the painted handle actually has a better grip than original. $18.00

    Chris,
I thought he was putting a mark on them for a while and he used to say so.
I don't see a notation anymore though. Of course my memory isn't what it used to be. :D

Maybe it was someone else or something changed his mind.

He may have been. I had his auctions blocked from my searches for awhile, blood pressure and all. ;) Sorry if I came off strong above, but as a collector this has been a peave of mine. It's not like these are rare and in need on conservation anyway.

    People likey shiny.

My husband replates these razors and he does no shill bidding

 This is Steve29702's wife. I just wanted to state that me and my husband are very honest people and do nothing wrong. He does not know I am writing this as it has upset him about how Chris or Mtgrayling keeps nagging this on for a year now all over the web, all over google and how he harassed him on ebay last year. Type in mtgraying on google, I know , I have seen and looked myself, emails still saved. As far as others, only one other ebay member wrote about the same topic and I was assured they were friends with Chris. So that adds up to 2 collectors, no more. It was ebay members and my support that got him to replating old razors that were useless so blame all of us. He spent months trying to find someone to replate razors he had here that were no good and no one would help and most not even respond. The one's that did respond said it was too hard to prepare and time consuming to replate. So with the help and support of me and our family members, he was able to buy his replating chemicals, voltage transformers, tanks, heaters, nickel anodes, polishing equipment, etc. hoping this would be a good idea. Also, there is no shill bidding as one in here states, no he don't start his razors off high, look at his site, there only .99 or as the last weeks starting at 0.01 and free shipping! As far as the last fatboy sold, here is the list that bidded on it below. (notice the starting price at the bottom) Do you call this unfair or shill bidding? Also, no aristocrat razor he has replated looks like a president. If your a collector, you will know the difference. He has president razors and he also has several gold diplomats that yes, it is just like a president but gold. Keep a check on his ebay as you will never see a replated gold diplomat as he has stated long ago he would never sell anything that could be sold for something it was not. I just wanted to clear things up. I am copying and pasting the fatboy bidders to prove no shill bidding is going on here. If you still don't believe, go to "advanced search", "items by bidder", look up there name, email or contact them, it will be there that there legal bidding ebayers and state there country: Never know, someone on here might know someone:D
PS: About another comment, it does not matter if the razor is taken apart or not as the chemicals are thin as water and will go into any space. It depends on how long it is left in the solution. So taken apart, he replates 30 minutes, left together, 45 minutes. As a sample, 30 minutes in a solution is what is required for replating shop tools! So, there not buying some type of thin cheap replating job.
