    Good evening.

    Straight Razor Shave #427
    Max Sprecher (74)
    Catie’s Bubbles Tuxedo Brush
    Razorock XX SS
    Stirling Old Spice AS
    Stirling Alum Block
    Beard Growth: 24.5 hrs

    20230114_174212.jpg

I went a little overboard with lathering because I literally made enough for at least 5 passes. Lol! I was just in a playful mood and I just got carried away. In any event, I produced a nice thick, creamy and slick lather that would be great for safety razors, but not so much for straight shaving, but I went with a Santa Claus Beard for my 2.5 passes. I haven't brought Max out for awhile and so it got the call. This is the 74th shave with this razor and I have only refreshed it once and that was after 50 shaves. I want to see if I can make it to at least 90 shaves before I bring it on my pasted strop once again. We'll see how it goes.
Anyway, did a 2.5 pass shave without any errors and I would rate it just a little below a BBS shave. On second thought, maybe I should refresh Artie sooner than later. Lol. However, it was a comfortable and smooth shave and that's what matter. I did make another face lather just to use up the soap, but I just rinsed it off of my face. As I mentioned earlier. I still had enough lather on the brush for a few more passes. The alum feedback was negligible. I splashed on the last of the Stirling Spice aftershave to end this session on a fine note. Take care.

P.S. As I was putting Max away, I decided to refresh it so I will be using this razor tomorrow.

Shave number two in the books.

As I hoped, the blade settled down nicely, and feels like a Feather on the second use. I'd almost forgotten how nice a vintage carbon could feel. Stropped pre and post-shave.

    Razor: Berkeley Custom Shaver
    Blade: Gillette Super Blue (2)
    Brush: Wolfman/Shavemac D01
    Soap: Saponifico Verisino Cosmo
Aftershave: Derby City Chop Shop's Winter Reserve
    Finish: RL Safari for Men

Thanks, Joe. It's a fairly recent addition on my collection, picked up in the last year or so. I've wanted one ever since @Darkbulb picked one up years ago and made a thread about it here: https://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/the-berkeley-custom-shaver.44348/

They were an adjustable made in the late 1930's, and shave very similarly to the Gillette adjustables on the lower settings. The max setting is pretty much equivalent to a pre-2011 R41, and is extremely aggressive. The adjustment is the same as the Progress, where you turn a knob at the bottom to adjust the razor and load it. The handle is hollow, and is designed to hold two cardboard tucks of blades.

They are uncommon, perhaps even edging into rare status. There's usually a couple floating around for sale in any given year, and they sell for about $50-100, depending on condition. They were originally sold in a cardboard lined wooden box, and came in three colors. The black is the most common, the maroon and ivory colors are rare.
