Just saw this pop up in one of my emails from Maggard Razors. It's a new razor or new to me at least from Pearl Razors. It's called the Hammer and is constructed of all Brass via CNC. Two heads come with the razor, an open & closed comb head. Don't know the specific shaving attributes of it concerning blade gap or exposure but, it caught my interest and for $44, I took a flyer on it plus Maggard has an additional 11% off code site wide, so I picked the trigger. Won't be able to try it out until next month as I'm in a fixed shave event for March but, thought I'd start a thread on it for those interested and might even pick one up.

Looks like they took a page out of Parker's book, which sells the 69CR, which they call a "convertible" since you can take the top down when it's sunny out...er, um, I mean you can switch baseplates from a straight bar to an open comb.

Of course without trying it you can never tell, but to me it looks like a fairly standard open comb and straight bar razor. But who knows?

I'd bet they're targetting newbies who want to try a straight bar and an open comb. I doubt they're trying to break new ground with DE vets.

Which Gillette came with 2 baseplates? Or one dual baseplate?

Razorock comes to mind with a razor that had both on the same plate. Ikon SBS and OSS are another. Don't know if those are still in production. There also was a well regarded Russian made razor called a Saiver that made an dual guard open comb razor. That one was also notable for being able to use 2 DE blades like a double blade cartridge.

And the currently available Yaqi Flipside.

I like the 2 baseplate concept. For the Parker 69CR, it was economical for me since I wanted to try both their open comb and their SB. Dual-combs never interested me. If I had one, I'd probably only use one side of the comb for a given shave, on a given day.

    Another nice razor: Hammer.
Two plates. Sounds good, not singing.
    Smooth, on mid-mild range.

Have you tried the Parker equivalent, the 69R, or any of their open comb or closed comb non-TTOs? If so, how do they compare? I picked Parker because it is also made in India. I rate Parkers mid to aggressive, with the saftey bar more aggressive then the OC.

    Compared to other popular razors?

    Thanks

    Actually, the Hammer is different.
    Not a classic geometry.
But I've not tried for now.

This new kind of shape, gives smoother shave.
More bending, and stiffness. So not singing ... aka chattering.
And the exposure is moderate, so It's easy.

This path at Parker started with 55SL.
That one I've had, and It's the best slant out there IMHE.

Then how did you know this? :)

I had a rough shave with the 55SL a few days ago. Hadn't tried it almost a year, when I also had a rough shave.
