I finally have a cream soap formula down that gives me lots of bubbles that last. Otherwise I use my own handmade soaps for shaving.
I started off with cream, C&E Sienna, then tried some of the same C&E scent in a soap. Then ordered some MB, I love that Rosemary and Mint. I started mixing the MB R&M with CO Biglow, it is very slick and cooling in the summer. Then I ordered the Ogallala Bay Rum sampler, containing bath soap, shaving soap, cologne, and after shave. I really like the Bay Rum/Sandelwood scent. I then started mixing it with some of the C&E Sienna. The soaps seem to be almost dry for me, still trying to get the water ratio correct. So I guess I use both, although I seem to have better luck with the creams, I am still not giving up on soaps.
I like both but right now I have more creams in my rotation than I do soaps. I used soaps exclusively from 1992 (I used to love the old Colgate soap) until I discovered the online shaving community earlier this year. My experience with creams is limited to CO Bigelow (Proraso), and the KMF Cool Mint and Lavendar (I like to buy local when I can, but living and working in Houston still gives me tons of options if I had the time to exercise them).
I started with soaps and then moved to creams. Soaps tend to dry out my face, which causes problems. Creams on the other hand, tend to moisturize and leave my face in better shape. The problem is that I have to use a lot of caution when shaving with creams. Creams aren't as slick as soaps and they don't protect against nicks as well- so if I'm not careful I nick myself a lot in a cream only shave. Cream brands I currently use: Derby menthol (not great but it works). C&E Sweet Almond (pricey but worth every penny). The C&E is concentrated and lasts forever. It feels more like a bridge between a soap and a cream to me.
both, depending on my mood... like jars better than tubes. Williams is my favorite ON HAND soap. there are a couple that i realy like that i don't currently have. T & H hands down favorite cream, (1805 & lavender).
Jars/tubs Usually get more for your money, and with tubes, I always feel like there is another ml or 2 that I can't squeeze out, with tubs/jars you can get every last bit. Although I can't say I have ever seen the bottom of any of my tubs of cream.
Jars look nicer, but tubes take up less space. So it's a toss up. I come down on the side of jars though. I do not however dip my bristles into the cream anymore; that was very wasteful I found. I use a plastic tongue depressor given to me at a C&E store to scoop out a small portion. Works pretty slick.
Of course. Why not? Don't really need it myself as I have these other things, but I'm sure those without would be grateful to have it.
maybe you can offer to include this with the tub, as not everyone will use them, and if you order 5 creams I think a 2 or 3 scoopers would be sufficient 5 would be a waste. Although some folks are A/R and would want one specific for each cream
Thank you everyone for your kind insight. I found a manufacturer that is willing to provide me with small plastic scoops, so I'm thinking I might add them to my soap creams in a jar at some future point.
cream guy im def a cream guy, ive used soaps ,but get a much richer lather from a cream, currently using Biggalo, by proaso
What soaps have you tried? I think you should revisit soaps and try a puck of Tabac. It would be in your best interest
Initially I preferred creams, because they seemed easier to lather. However, as my technique improved, I began moving more to soaps. Now my collection is predominantly soaps. I prefer the lather - slicker, especially from the triple-milled variety. I still keep a couple essential creams on hand, though, that are excellent - TOBS Mr. Taylor and Musgo Real. I've tried several other creams - T&H, GFT, AOS, Coates, KMF, Proraso, eShave, Nancy Boy, Aqua di Parma, L'Occitane. I just always got better lathers from soaps.
