High technology.... View attachment 283413 I wonder which ended first -- doctors making house calls or TV repairmen coming to the house. TV repairmen don't even exist anymore...but doctors do. Doctors don't examine much anymore, though. I had an appt. last week, and other than weighing me and taking my blood pressure, it was just a discussion. I remember as a kid back in the 70s waiting for the TV repairman to show up. He would come in with a big box filled with tubes. A simple replacement and the TV was like new again. Picture tubes were a different story -- I don't remember if they came back with one or if they had to take the TV into the shop.
__ I did TV repair starting out in my trade. We normally took the televisions to the shop because the solid state TV's required more test equipment and replacement parts that were unique to each unit. The main thing I remember was the heaviest TV was a Curtis Mathes and the wide screen televisions. Replacing a picture tube was much easier in the shop because you needed equipment to aline the picture. Zenith TV's you could change out the entire board making it a fully rebuild unit Less the picture tube. TV's, VCR's, Microwave ovens and stereos became to cheap to repair by the late 80's. I had moved on to my passion, high power Broadcast transmitters and Microwave links by 1990. Now things are to cheap to repair. Nowadays if a TV dies, it's cheaper to just replace it. The parts aren't made to repair or replace. Sad... Memories.... to
The TV we had repaired was all tubes -- no solid state. A mid-60s model (RCA? Don't remember) that lasted until the late 80s. Last time I remember it being repaired was the 70s. When we got a few solid state TVs in the late 70s, the old tube one got less and less use, but it persevered on, and outlasted the solid state ones.
