@Steve56 Irony we were just talking about these older Sheffield razors that it seems the Heels were never brought into play until now.. Marches & Sheperd Pond Works one of those oddities with a Slantnose The MM test showed it all.. Before: After: Nothing special needed, just "Honing Gymnastics" and a Chosera/Pro 1k Hone On !!!
Re-Contouring the bevel and heel on this old Wosty Was working with a well worn DMT 325 but I think it is time to take it to the shop and get serious about this hehehehe
Cleaned, Polished, and Honed @Axeman556 Since we were talking about the Zulu's the other day, and this "GreenLizard" was on the hones today, I decided to use mine for the finish after the Chosera/Pro line up 1/5/10k These razors are incredible shavers out of Little Valley NY Hone On !!!
Catching up, hope you all made good use of the Memorial Day weekend, we spent it on the lake.. Yesterday on the hones.. Chosera -1-5-10 ladder progression into a few different finishers Coticule Escher 9-Ball Slate "Lil Huntress": Remi making sure the Swallows that tried to make a nest under the corner of the Bimini know she is not having it at all... Hone On !!!
Thiers-Issard Made in France 15/16th Half Hollow This one is @lindyhopper66 's razor. I didn't like the look of the very large bevel on it, so I used 2 layers of tape, to decrease the bevel more than half. Just for fun, took the bevel down to the 1k and worked my way up the Welsh Slate Stones, using a few Naguras acquired by @Steve56 , a long while back. I then topped it off with an Arkansas Surgical Black stone. It took a keen edge, that easily passed the HHT with the root in and root out, on some very fine hair.
J.A.Henkels "Friodur Inox No Stain" (Stainless) Solingen Germany 15/16th Full Hollow Second one of @lindyhopper66 's blades. It too was taken down to ground zero, with the bevel. Only one layer of tape was needed. I used a one stone hone(kind of) with a Nakayama and Naguras, acquired from @Steve56 , a long while back. I finished on an Eschers Thuringian, under running water. Excellent results, and an easy progression. Easily passed the Root in and out HHT. It was a pleasure to shave with this morning.
Suzumasa 13/16th 1/2 Hollow This one only needed a touch-up, on an Eschers Thuringian stone. It feels pretty good, after 30 laps on the stone, and a little time with the strop. It now easily pops the finest of hairs, root in or out.
Bartmann 504 6/8 It has been so long since I've had to hone any of my straights that I lost trust in my abilities to reset a bevel and get a straight shaving well. @DaltonGang honed my TI after I tried different methods and stones. Someone reminded me in all this is if you get the bevel where it will shave hair, all the rest is easy. I had to do double the amount of circles on the 1K Naniwa to get a good bevel, but after that with the 5K, 8K, 12K and 20K Gokumyo I got a very smooth and sharp edge and had a great 2 pass shave with it today.
NICE, those old Thuri's do a great job. I need to shelve my JNATs and play with my Escher more. Cheers!
