US Post Office - a brief rant

As have probably most people here, I’ve sent many packages of varying size and weight across North America, and to folks in UK and EU. Sidebar, I recently overbought some soap that would have gone to waste just sitting there. Who among us hasn’t done the same, am I right? Well, maybe three or so weeks ago I had the opportunity to share a tub of soap with a pal in Oklahoma. First class mail got it delivered in three days, iirc. Used to be two days to just about anywhere conus. This past Monday I sent another tub, same size box, NYC to PNW. First class mail was no longer an available option. Packages now go by “Ground Advantage.” Same price, but slower service. It was delivered today, five days… Someone please explain how this saves the post office money? It must cost plenty of money to fuel the trucks that carry the packages. How many more pairs of hands are touching the package before it arrives at its destination? How can it be that much more cost effective compared to putting it on a jet that’s going there anyway?

I’m sorry. Is it just me?

Nope. Can't say I've ever overbought soap. ;)

Last year sent a package to an address 45 minutes away. I'm in New Jersey. Tracking showed it went all the way out to Denver, CO!! :signs131:

Don’t you just want to smack someone in the head?
Funny you mention NJ. I’m in Queens. A few years back I bought some stuff from a brick and mortar with an online presence. They’re about 15 miles away. On a Sunday morning with no traffic I can drive there, park and be on my way home in about 30-45 minutes. But hey, free shipping, so why not… it was two and a half, nearly three weeks before the package arrived on my front stoop. Tracking showed it went up and down the NJ Tpke twice!

My experience I've seen lately is it is not the mode of transportation for delays but how long it takes for the post office(s) to process mail and packages.

@chazt - Thanks again for the soap! :happy093:

Well, that does it! Where can I find a Transporter to ship my shave gear?

...and a Transporter would be a very handy way to export all the Clubman to Jupiter. :happy102:

I will say I ordered a new hat from Del Monico Hatter in CT on Saturday morning and it was waiting for me when I got home from work Monday afternoon.

Jupiter?! Pfft. How about the center of the Sun? Though, come to think of it, it may not be worth the ensuing supernova. :(

You got lucky. We've had a lot of problems with the mail in CT lately. Not just things being greatly delayed, but things not ever arriving. Which makes things awkward when it comes to bill payment and invoice receipt.

You may have signed on as @wristwatchb, but I bet you let your darling bride write the Clubman part. Unless.....YOU did it. :signs131:

I'd like to see a train proceed its way through that fan behind the man's behind.

It was 6 days. And yeah, it's annoying. Royal Airmail can get a package from London, England to Salem, Oregon in 7-8 days, consistently and cheaply, and I'm still not sure how they manage that. Kent and Connought Shaving both have some sort of sweetheart postal deal going. Everyone else in the U.K. has to spend near $30 for shipping to the U.S.
