our friend Ryan @PLANofMAN has been in touch with Mitchells recently over the new reformulation.
    https://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/farewell-to-mitchells-wool-fat-mwf-reformulation.67349/
to quote him on his current mwf thread..
"As for the "original 1893 formula," I don't think they ever paid much mind to it. It's just marketing to MWF. The shaving soap was introduced in 1979-1980, and the 'original formula' never really applied to the shave soap at all, but to the hand soap."

Thanks Joe, if nothing else I am a trier. My water is kind of hard, usually add some citric acid to the sink water to help out. Yep, soaked the puck in the container overnight the day before I revisited this and tend to bloom the soap, too, despite there being an avid anti-bloomer brigade somewhere out there!

    Thanks Gary.

Thanks Gary, I was beginning to wonder myself if certain brushes are better suited for different soaps, nice to get that confimation

Hi John, my MWF is the tallow based one, and after all the internet hype about the new formula I was pleased to be able to get some more tallow based refills....hmm now I just need to get comfortable with it. Nice post shave feel. But if I can't get it to work as easily as Joe says he does (see reply below) then I don't think it is worth the extra hassle.

And oh, just another thought, apart from the MWF lather I haven't been using the Proraso pre shave for those shaves. Another variable. Guess what is in the shopping list for tomorrow Lol!

Yes, looking at my shaving "notes" I first used the MWF in March, and my notes say I used RO water with some success. That's quite a long loading time, Joe I will try that too, together with some RO water and a synthetic, more to play with, but really, it should be easier than it has been thus far, else it's not worth the effort

PS/Edit: @Terry knows a thing or two about water here

I had a nice shave this morning-the first day of Barbershop Week. The Jeeves Bay Rum soap really felt nice on my face and neck, got me set for the shave action. No cuts, Knicks, Polka-dots. Very well-done all around. 2 passes. The Gabels Bay Rum aftershave added to the cleanliness, but I'm still working on getting used to the clove persuasion it has. Not too much, but enough to bug me. I guess we can't expect amything less with a Bay Rum product. Course the Phoenix Bay Rums have NO clove scents. I'm pleased., except f0r having to flip the Eight&Bob after just 2 shaves. 2 ML ain't much. As Outstanding As It Gets.

Using MWF for the first time, I was so thrilled at working with an "1893" product until someone poured rain on my thrill parade, saying it was a 1937 product(result of a reformulation). Ahh, still counted as a Throwback Thursday offering, but I loved the idea of using a soap that was two years older than my paternal grandparents, both born in 1895.

the hand soap was introduced in the 1930's,maybe folks used it for shaving as well.many folks used soap ends during these years.

Now that you mention it, it(MWF)could easily pass for a hand soap.

SE Shave # 343 - DECLARATION GROOMING MICROMATIC MONDAY

    Rating: 5 / 5

    Razor: GEM Micromatic Bullet Tip
    Blade: GEM Stainless
Brush: Shore Shave Player 26 mm
    Lather: Declaration Grooming/Chatillon Lux Nefertiti
    Aftershave: Chatillon Lux Nerfertiti
    Additional Care:
    Omega Alum
    Dickenson’s Original Witch Hazel
    Stirling Unscented Glacial Balm

Another outstanding MMBT shave this morning. Naturally, I do enjoy my DG/CL soaps and splashes. The Nerfertiti is top notch in my opinion. I should use it more often. Unfortunately, DG/CL are not making this collaboration at the time. You can acquired the EdP on the Chatillon Lux website under the Maher Offactive link. The scent profile is as follows: “Queen Nefertiti was known to wear a perfume of honey and orchid leaf, so in this fragrance, I combine those warm tones with a crescendo of coniferous kyphi incense, a glissando of jasmine, sparkling terpenes, and the percussive base of oud, immortelle, vetiver and musk.”.

I completed my usual three pass shave with stelllar results. It is definitely hard to compete with a Micromatic shave. I always receive a super close shave.

Hope you all enjoy your day.

Aug 28 SOTA Micromatic Menthol Monday SOTA

    Good afternoon.

    GEM MMOC RAZOR
    GEM SE Blade (3)
    JR #290 Cashmere Brush
    PAA K. Rex Emporium SS
    TSD M Bomb ( not pictured )

    Stirling Alum Block
    Modessa Witch Hazel
    Beard Growth: 23 hrs

I was going to go for another straight shave, but decided to go for the GEM SE MMOC. It's nickname is the Straight on a Stick. I also went with the mildly barbershop scent of PAA K. Rex Emporium SS made with Kokum butter. This was PAA's earlier formula and I have to say it's very good. I got a nice, slick and creamy lather. I added the menthol drops as a last minute decision and that's why it wasn't pictured. For the best results, add a few drops after you made the lather and then swirl it into the lather. Here's the lather:

    20230828_161205.jpg

The GEM MMOC razor gives an excellent shave, but you have to find the sweet spot, otherwise it gets a little rough. I have used this razor at least 10 x and had my best shave with it. I had the shave angle more shallower so that it was 99% flat as if I was using a carpet cleaner. Three passes gave me an error-free BBS result. I might add that I had previously used a knockoff GEM Blade and that may have also been a factor for this nice shave. I will know for sure when I use one of those blades with the new angle. That's if I remember. Lol!

The alum feedback was evident on my neck, but that's not unusual with a very close shave. Did a double splash of the witch hazel. Topped the shave with the old standby of Pinaud-Clubman Classic aftershave. Tomorrow will be a traditional straight shave and I am thinking of using my 15/16 near wedge Wolstenholm because I haven't used it in awhile. Take care.
