I have recently started using an alum block, followed by witch hazel, followed by A/S splash. I know that sounds like a lot, but my face feels better after a shave, now, than it ever has before.
I'll use an aftershave splash followed by Aubrey's aftershave balm which is basically scentsless; like me.:whacky011 When I got home tonite my order of 444 balm from Vintage Scents was waiting on my door step. When I pierced the nozzle it pooped out a bloop of balm. So I washed my face, mixed that bloop with a splash of Dominica Bay Rum and smooshed it on my face. Absorbed nicely and no tackyness. My face feels soft as a baby seal. Dannyr
Witch hazel (Thayer's or Dickinson's...but I liked Thayer's more) or alum block and then whatever after shave I want.
I voted for everything. I use everything, just not all at once. The "other" is moisturizer. Like just plain straight moisturizer. I didn't count it as an AS balm/lotion because it's not marketed as an AS. Maybe that's because it's my wife's Mary Kay But now that I've gotten the TSD AS Milk samples, I haven't needed the moisturizer. Summer time is splashes. Thayers alcohol free original WH. Always.
I use either a balm or a splash, depending on my mood. If I feel like I had a rough shave for whatever reason, I'll use witch hazel first then whatever else I'm using that day.
Thayers Witch Hazel, then either AS or ASB. I have some Burts Bees Bay Rum that is just killer, I also like the Ogallala AS, specifically the Bay Rum/Sandlewood.
I mostly use a splash followed by milk in the winter time. Why use both? I like the splash for scent, feel, and most importantly because I want to. The milk soothes and moisturizes. In the summer time I use splashes only for the most part.
Mostly is a balm. Lately is either Weleda or Zirh Sooth Sandalwood - It doesn't really come in sandalwood, I just blended an Art Of Shaving sandalwood balm sample that I got at the mall into a half full Zirh Sooth bottle- smells great. In the summer I tend to go with Speick splash
I use Dickinson's witch hazel infused with an essential oil (currently lemon), and follow that with home-made skin food (Corn Huskers lotion, glycerin, essential oil). However, when I use mint soap or cream, I follow with Nivea AS balm with peppermint oil added.
Splash = Old Spice, AV, Pinaud Followed with... Balm = most often a homebrew adapted from Rick's recipes, but also AOS Sandalwood, Cade.
