So, when using an adjustable razor do you experiment till you find the setting you like and then leave it there?

Or do you change the settings during the shave? Or does it depend on the blade you're using? Or?????

    Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks in advance and enjoy those shaves

    Yes.

Seriously though, I did lots of experimenting when I got my first adjustable and experimented with each subsequent adjustable (I have a few). After finding a setting that suits me, I tend to leave it there, but I have and do occasionally change the settings during the shave. Sometimes that depends on the blade and other times on whatever soap/cream I happen to be using (some are more slippery than others). I've also had to dial back (mid-shave) if I got in a hurry, wasn't paying attention, and ended up causing irritation.

The benefit of an adjustable razor is the ability to fine tune the tool. No need to feel as though it has to be set the same all the time but on the other hand, constant fiddling will probably be frustrating. Maybe you've lived in a home with someone who can't stop fussing with the thermostat or someone who sets it and then locks it.

I have several adjustables. Each one is different than the others. I "experiment" with the settings every time I shave since I don't mark the setting down from the last time. That was each time out is an adventure! But once I find the best setting I'll use that razor for a while.

    Enjoy and have fun!

I have one 1958 D3 Adjustable. When I first got it, I did some experimenting. Turns out, I like it wide open. That's now where it stays. I do lubricate the mechanism and "adjust" the dial on occasion, just to keep it in fine fettle.

I typically stick with a razor and a brand of blades for an extended period of time. This gives me a chance to get used to the blade exposure, angle, etc. and adjust my technique accordingly. In that regard, I don't think the setting on an adjustable makes a significant difference. I just pick a setting and leave it there. I've gone for extended runs with Slims and Fatboys on 5 and also 9. Regardless, the shaves have been good after a shave or three where I've gotten accustomed to the way the razor shaves.

I found that changing razor settings during the shave added additional variables that weren't helpful for me.

    ??? :think002:  :think002: ???
Doesn't the setting stay where you put it once you're finished with the shave, thus being at the same place from last time for the next shave?
Do you back it down to 1 when you finish?
Or does the dial creep on it's own? :p ;)

I set all of them to the max. I overclock the ones that have the ability.

The last time @Herm2502 invited me over for dinner, I stealthily set all his adjustables on 2 and refilled his aftershave bottles with Clubman.

I find the spot I like the best on my fat boy and slim, and pretty much leave them there. I used to fiddle a lot trying to find him the shave, but found it to be more of a nuisance than anything. The spot I like the best seems to approximate a non-adjustable super speed or flare tip. I guess I'm the kind of guy who doesn't really need an adjustable at all!

Also I plan to try the Yaqi Trifecta shims on the Parker Variant since it's useless since it can't be overclocked like the Progress.

On both the Parker Variant and the Merkur Progress the setting is made when you install the blade and tighten the handle. Loosening the handle to remove the blade and rinse the razor loses the setting. Different design than a FatBoy or Slim with a separate dial.

You've been experimenting with razors, and blades, here at TSD, for 15 yrs, and you haven't figured it out yet?? :signs131:
Have you tried Disposable Cartridge Razors? :D Hahahahaha!

I've figured it out for me. Just curious about what others think/do. Disposable razors? Bah Humbug!

Setting 5 seems to be the magic number for me with most blades. If trying something new with a reputation for sharpness, I will start on three and work up to five over two shaves...

I have two teens at home and zero free time to be keeping track of specific numbers for different blades. If it does not work on five, it goes in the PIF pile...

    Similar here.
I have two blades that I know work in every razor I have, fixed or adjustable (without the need to change the setting).
Astra SP and a generic packaged for the military BX/PX. Been using just these two brands for the past 8-9 years, maybe?
Don't have the desire to track what blade works in what razor, especially with 30+ razors in the rotation.

5 is the number on Fatboys, for me. Most any quality blade will suffice.
