Well, as long as you can keep yourself hydrated and keep getting a bit of food down as well, you should be alright. And an urgent care clinic won't be able to do much more for you other than tell you that you're sick with a virus - which you already know.

For viral infections, I think all an urgent care clinic can really do is run an IV to get some fluids directly into someone if they have let themselves get too dehydrated. And maybe treat some of the symptoms a bit by adding a painkiller to the IV and supplying something a little better than Gravol to calm upset stomachs. Modern medicine still can't do much to fight most viruses directly once you have caught them - unlike bacterial illnesses where the bacteria can be wiped out in short order with an antibiotic. So it's mainly a case of keeping the patient in good shape while their body gradually evicts the virus.

The tooth itself was not too painful right away. It already had a huge filling in it, which came out after the back rim of the tooth suddenly gave way. Leaving a gaping crater where the back 3/4 of the tooth had been. So I mostly lost dead mass and only a bit of the exposed "floor" was sensitive. The freezing is never pleasant going in or wearing off, however. And my wallet was shrieking in absolute agony afterwards :).

John, sorry to hear about the dental emergency. I hope all is well now.

A shave every 2.5 days is still probably more frequent than 95% of today's male population. :)

I continue to follow your focus to learn more about Schick injectors. I had a later-issue Type E that would not open for cleaning, and I passed it along rather than risk a modification that might damage it. Maybe I'll grab another injector someday. At that point, I'll know more about what to look for.

Hence, that is why another PAA soap could be in your future. Don’t point the finger at me, there are others in this group that can be just as devious. Right Charlie, @wristwatchb!

    Outstanding g shave Joe.

Thanks, gents! The tooth is fine now.

Actually, while I was sitting in The Chair, I was reflecting on the changes to dentistry during my lifetime. The assistant did X-rays, after first basically swaddling me from top to bottom with lead-lined cloths for radiation protection. Then, when the dentist managed to squeeze me in, she started by swabbing my gums with a topical anesthetic to dull the needle prick and only then injected the freezing in a couple spots. Then did the drilling and filling with some newer type of quick-set tooth Bondo.

When I was a kid, I went to an old-school dentist who trained during or shortly after WW2. My first few fillings were on small cavities, so he felt freezing was "unnecessary". The anesthetic consisted of gripping the chair arms and holding on while he drilled and filled.

Later, I had a couple slightly larger cavities and he did do freezing. None of this namby-pamby topical gel first though - just straight to the big needle into the gums or inner cheek... Probably partly why I have always hated needles, I guess.

He retired in the 1980s and I started going to a more modern dentist, whose clinic I still use. That's when I learned about this new-fangled technique of numbing the sensitive areas before jamming the needle in.

Even there, though, I really don't remember any concern about stray X-ray radiation and lead protective covers against it until maybe the 1990s or so.

Anyway, I really hate to think what Friday would have been like in my first dentist's chair...

@Trigger definitely needs more soaps, aftershaves, razors, and blades, and Pasteur's is just around the block.

I have to give Joe credit. He is still recovering, yet he had the strength to withstand a dousing of Clubman. Or maybe he just wasn't thinking clearly due to low blood sugar? Either way, somebody should probably go check on him while standing upwind this evening.
