I was curious so looked up on the making of Abyss and they really did have a rat breathe the oxygenated perfluorocarbon fluid (actually 4-5 rats).

This was my first time seeing it. It is excellent-- tense, horrifying, and thought-provoking. I was quite surprised to see Raymond Burr as the bad guy. This was made was just a couple of years before he became Perry Mason.
