Aaah, there he goes again. What else has @Sara-s been feeding you? Course we talked about this, you're the pun person now until the end of the Olympics. Different subject-how do I find more Art Razor shave soaps like the one you sent me?
Another Bay Rum soap on my list is that from Sir Hare Co. I like Sir Hare. They claim little to zero clove scent on their Bay Rum, but after what I went through with Gabel's(which said the same thing, and DOES have clove in its BR), I'll believe it when I smell it(or the LACK OF it).
My Top Five Bay Rums: 1) Meehan Bay Rhum (Bonny Doon Farm) 2) Dominica 3) St Johns 4) Royall Bay Rhum (Made in Bermuda) 5) Barrister & Mann Kyovu (The first iteration of their Bay Rum---along with their OG soap).
My local pharmacy is bringing in a bottle of Fine Accoutrements Bay Rum for me. Should be in Thursday . Beyond that, I’m open to suggestions from all. The list above seems a good place to start. Big thanks to all for participating in and enabling what seems to be my newly acquired bay rum AD. BRAD?
Looks to be a very good first choice. I'd be interested in your clove commentary-some say there's a lot, others say it's just the right amount(as I've described my #1,, aftershave Stephan).
Brain activity alert….. Gayle and I honeymooned in Bermuda. We spent one particular afternoon strolling leisurely through Hamilton. In the middle of a strip of shops that was connected by a blocks-long, 10 ft deep, covered wooden deck (iirc, there weren’t any sidewalks in that area), was a Royall outlet shop. Gayle said I should get a bottle of cologne as a souvenir. I bought a 4 ounce (?) bottle of the musk scent. Used it sporadically, on and off for some twenty odd years until it finally went pffft… still have the empty bottle on a shelf in my closet. Obviously, Royall Bay Rhum is that good and worth it to you, eh, Joseph? You swear by the stuff?
Stephan seems to enjoy a near mythical status. Those who like it speak of it reverently. From what I’ve seen, Stephan seems to be available in only (relatively speaking) large-ish bottles. I’ve never seen it in any brick and mortar store.
The OG, Made in Bermuda, is hard to come by and not inexpensive. I have a half-ish bottle. Do I swear by it? IMO, it's great. In my top 5. Scents are very subjective, so, as the saying goes, YMMV. Should be in most barbershops. And you're right.....I think 15 oz. or gallon-sized are the key bottle sizes.
Yes. It's not 'clove' forward like some other bay rums. It has some oak and vanilla elements in it from the whiskey base that you won't find in any other bay rums. I've gone through 8 bottles of it over the years. About to re-order another two. They use the proper bay leaf variety too, not some generic 'bay oil.' I'd put it on the same level as Royall, for using 'real' alcohol and ingredients, which adds some complexity to a very straightforward scent like bay rum. It's not my only aftershave, but pretty close. Scent is short-lived, about 30 minutes, though it does linger close to the skin and on any clothes you are wearing all day. I always decant some into a glass spritz bottle. It's a neater application than the eye dropper arrangement they send it out with. It's also 8 ounces, not the 4.2 ounces typical of most aftershaves. Shipping is a bit dear though, which is why I order two at a time to help offset the cost. Probably ought to order four at a time, really.
Recently mixed Suavecito, vintage Avon, Stephans, Superior 70, and a little Lucky Tiger tonic into a BR mix that is my favorite ever. Good stuff... https://suavecito.com/products/bay-rum-aftershave
Dude, right on! You are a bona fide bay rum connoisseur! Dominica is excellent. Too bad they got wiped out by the hurricane. I first tried their bay rum in the early 1990s, long before discovering traditional shaving. It was in a J. Peterman catalog, if I am not mistaken. And you have three bottles, you lucky bum! Meehan is also really good, at least to my nose. It's good to see it is still being sold. Bonny Doon got hit hella hard by the CZU wildfire a few years back, and I was wondering if their business would survive. Bonny Doon Farms' Uplands and Sandalwood colognes are also great. My fave bay rum was Krampert's Finest, but unfortunately that business closed around the time Bonny Doon was getting incinerated. Superior 70 is another good one, and is dirt cheap.
These all arrived yesterday. Fine’s I bought locally. The samples were by mail order (I ordered them and they came by mail). This will be fun!
I opened everything with a screw top cap multiple times during the day for sniff assessments. These are my initial thoughts. Knee jerk, as it were. I used the Fine Bay Rum for today’s splash du jour. Oh, it’s a definite keeper! Reminds me a bit of the Harris Bay Rum which I like a lot. They’re not exactly the same, but can be considered close cousins. 1A, 1B. Know what I mean? Kind of like CSNY and The Bloody ‘oo, 3A and 3B on the chazt list of musical faves. Know what I mean? Wink, wink, nudge, nudge. Say no more… know what I mean? Ha! Isn’t Eric Idle a hoot? Say, do you know which artists are my 1,2 and 5? The first person to name them correctly in 1, 2, 5 order can choose one of the Ogallala samples listed below with an **asterisk** and I’ll mail it out lickety split! Conus only, please… But first, the screw top potions that have earned a spot in actual post-shave trials are Ogallala Bay Rum, Ogallala Bay Rum Sage & Cedar, and Captain’s Choice Bay Rum. I’m looking forward to finishing these three samples and may want to add one or more in a full size bottle. The following items will not have their options picked up. They will be added to the Traveling Box when it’s my turn (minus one like I said, whichever gets snapped up by the flash PIF winner). Enjoy Cat o’ nine tails, VIBR, The Veg, Ogallala Bay Rum *Cologne*, Ogallala Bay Rum & *Sandalwood*, and Ogallala Bay Rum, *Limes & Peppercorn*. The smaller samples that are in little bitty test tube thingies will have their initial evaluations at a date to be determined.
