I can see some metal scarring left from the corrosion but still plenty of firm grip left. If you zoom into the second photo you might be able to see how the red dot is more of a red blob. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks for the new pics. Aside from the damage that was done, due to corrosion, it looks pretty good. I would say Razor Emporium did a pretty good job with the plating. The knurling of the handle look very nice, and no overplating.
July 2023, bought these two from back roads gold already plated, so don't know the prior condition since you asked for pics, these are the ones I took on arrival. Plating still holding up well nearly a year later although I don't use them daily hope this helps
Are you using it often, and if so, how does it hold up ? Thinking of having a Slim redone in gold as a birthday gift to myself.
To be honest, it's too pretty to use. It is a thick layer. Much much thicker than the factory thickness. From the reviews their Gold coatings a top notch and last. I was thinking of having a Birthday Slim done in gold too. As well as a British Aristocrat in Gold. Gillettes factory gold finish is horrible.
The only one I haven't been able to use is Sports Shaving. He suspended his operation last year and hasn't started back up. He told me the jewelry business is keeping him too busy. I've had several razors done by Razor Emporium years ago, and they did a good job, except for one with a spot in a door, it looks like a water spot. The others were done well, he is just too proud of his work lately. Twice what everyone else is.
the brit gillette gold razors have a nice finish, gold razors are quite rare there, they like rhodium..
I think the only one you missed in your original list is Reliable Electroplating, and I don't know if they still do razors anymore. They were one of the first places to offer razor replating services when that became a thing. Edit: the website link I had for them no longer works. It seems they are no longer in business.
I looked for them too, when I created this thread. I wasn't able to find them, so, no mention. I'm still hoping Sportshaving.com will get back into plating.
I have 4 that have been refreshed. Back in the dark ages, I sent a LC New and an Old Type to Bob's Razor Works when I purchased a couple of his handles. I don't know who he used for plating but I know he sent them out. Other than that, Chris from razor plate did a New Improved and a New Deluxe for me. The refinish on all are at least a decade old and are all holding up well.
I finally decided to bite the bullet and send my Gillette Slim in for replating and noticed this on the Back Roads Gold website. Have any of you fine folks sent one in recently and had the replating done by Dustin? I talked to Chris at Razorplate.com and he seemed like a nice fellow. Going to have him replate my razor and report back with the results here.
Since Dustin has been in the store for such a long time, working together with Chris I do not expect surprises. Chris at Razorplate.com has done a few replates for me - all very high quality.
Here you can judge about Dustin's work: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/BackRo...-name&listing_id=1796882152&from_page=listing
I have a 1934 Aristocrat I've acquired, that I plan on sending off to BackRoadsGold, in the next few weeks. 24k.
