I found this puck in a Flea Market awhile back. Anybody have any idea when it was made? Did it come with the cellophane around it or did someone add it later?

The "Peet" was dropped from the company name in 1953, so your soap was packaged pre-1953.

My guess would be someone added the plastic wrap. I'm not sure they had that in 1953 and it sure doesn't look 60 yrs old but I could be wrong. It's happened before :). Regardless, that's a nice find. Are you going to use it?

I'd bet that they had cellophane back then, but not the shrink wrap type. I'd guess the the cellophane was added later. Even Williams isn't packaged in cellophane, nor are toothpaste boxes.

You can tell by the shelf wear on the edges of the box that it was added later...

A google search ,,cellophane was in wide use by 1938. So yeah...they had it. The blue blade of that time have it but it is glued and folded not shrink rap.

I just can't imagine why someone would shrink wrap it later.

You quoted me before I put the edit in. :)

The shelf wear on the edges of the box indicates that the cellophane was added later.

I have a puck of Colgate Barbers soap. I grated it up and pressed it into an Old Spice mug. Lathers up great but has very little scent. That could be because when I found it at the antique store it was sans box or wrapper. Just rinsed it off and there ya go.

I can think of two possibilities. One, they might be trying to preserve what scent is has left and keep the box from getting more beat up, or two, if you had a box from vintage soap, but didn't want somebody opening it up to see what you substituted inside, you'd shrink wrap it.

I'm going to be upset if there is a puck of Williams in there. :angry019: I will definitely open it when I get home.

Better than a box of confetti or an empty box. :p

I have some Colgate Cup soap that I use once in a while. It's great stuff! I also have some vintage Williams but it hasn't been touched yet.

I opened it and it is Colgate! The puck is pretty dry. Did you rehydrate yours before using it?

No I did not. After using it a time or two I felt it needed a boost in scent. So, I let it dry out real well and added several drops of EO and let it soak in for about a week before using it again. Worked wonders! I only use mine about 1/2 a dozen times a year but it is phenomenal stuff though!

I grate the vintage soap pucks into a Ziploc container and add just a litttle water to help the pieces smoosh together.

That's what I've done with mine, only into an Old Spice mug.

Thread resurrection. I needed a new soap yesterday and looked in my stash where I saw an old box of Colgate cup soap in the solid red box like the one in the first post of this thread. I got a few pucks of it close to a decade ago. I used one of them back then and it was pretty good as I remember. The last couple shaves with this puck have been excellent. The puck was pretty dry and I didn't do anything special to rehydrate it. Just dropped it in a soap container, lathered it and it was good. I wish you could just go to any store and buy a puck of shave soap this good now.

Yes, wouldn’t that be a beautiful thing? It really is unfortunate that it’s not likely to ever happen again.
