I find that as well. I have tried a few time without the pre-shave, with less than stellar results, so it is still part of my routine until I find the perfect soap/razor/blade/technique ;)

    Very classy looking razor
Cool one passer, I don't manage many of those

    Thanks Gary

    Superb setup and shave

I like the funky little brush, really cool, and the super lather

    Thanks Joe

    Shavette Shave # 250 - Open Blade Shave # 1500

    Rating: 5 / 5

    Razor: RenRen Shavette
    Blade: Perma-Sharp
    Brush: Opus Shaving Brushes “Underdog”
Lather: Wholly Kaw King of Oud
    Aftershave: PAA Sangre de Drago
    Additional Care:
    Omega Alum
    Dickenson’s Original Witch Hazel
    Stirling Unscented Glacial Balm

Milestone shave - I just completed my 1500th Open Blade shave. As I tend to favor the straights by a large margin, 5/6 or 83.3%, I still enjoy using the shavettes. Naturally, the shavettes offer less time in preparation, both before and after the shave compared to the straights. The next milestone, 1750, should be attained at some point during the Summer of 2026. Of course if I really wanted to push it, I could do it before the end of this year. Nah, I do enjoy the safety razors in my den as well.

The soap has only 5 shave left in the tub. The Edmund Fitzgerald will be arriving to port the week of March 17th.

congrats Joe. That’s quite a few years of straight shaves behind you. I wonder how many years it would take to notch those up esp if you mix in some SE and DE shaves. Just asking

is that because it’s so small or because it’s mixed badger and boar, or just well seasoned Barry? Can’t say I have a mixed brush myself but then I have enough for now.

These numbers are since December 2017. Thanks Chris. Over the last 4 years I have recorded 200 straight shaves and 30 Shavette shaves per year. Single edge, excluding injectors, about 55 year. Injectors about 20 per year. Finally, DEs round out at about 65 per year.

I keep track of the usage on a spreadsheet

    March Madness

Razor - Parker Shavette/Kai AC pain stick
    Blade - derby-shavette.jpg / artist-club-small-professional-blades.jpg
    Soap - Stirling Fair Debonaire/Arko
    Brush - Rooney Silvertip/30DC 2019 meetup with Badger/Boar

Let's do something a little mad and call for "shavette Sunday". I haven't used my shavettes and pain sticks much so it'st ime to give them a round of shaves. For the face shave I picked the Parker stainless shavette, one of the best in its class. Used a Derby professional shavette blade. For the lather I chose the Stirling Fair Debonaire (Haverford) and decided to use my big Rooney Silvertip brush. It rarely comes off the shelf either. The brush was almost too big for the smaller Stirling container (limited edition soap) but I managed to load it up. I did get a good lather but felt it could have been better on the first pass. The Parker was easy to handle, just a bit of muscle memory to relearn. I finished the first pass fine, re-lathered, then went for the second pass. Pretty nice but I did nick myself twice. Nothing big, one on my right jawline, one on my left neck. Still got a DFS out of it so perfectly happy for a Sunday.

For the head shave I grabbed my Kai Artist Club razor, aka pain stick, and loaded a Feather Pro in it. Arko with the badger/boar provided boatloads of lather and I got a nice smooth shave on the right side of my head. Left side created a few problems. Had a bad setdown, not enough to bleed but enough to make me a bit jumpy. Finished it off with one minor nick and called it good. Heisenberg pass in the shower took it to the chrome dome. All in all a great shave.

One note - the Rooney is a huge and luxurious brush, but the lather issue I felt like I was experiencing was a bit real. When I rinsed the brush I got a ton of lather out, so this thing is a bit of a lather hog. I'll remember that for next time. Happy Sunday!!

It's my only mixed badger & boar which is a great combination the firmness of the boar and the softness of the badger bristles is a great mixture. It felt pretty much seasoned after a few outings. If and when I have to put it into retirement, I will replace it. It's size is deceiving, and it holds a good amount of lather too, more than what you would think.

Came back to yesterday's shave for today and another great one. Clean and clear all around. One pass.. Another strong end from Valley Forge. Bricktown Grooming should merge with Strike Gold, as both artisans place much emphasis on our Presidents. As Outstanding As It Gets.
